The ABS DWV P-Trap features a hub x hub connection and provides a water seal so that wastewater will automatically be trapped in the arc of the configuration, thereby preventing unwanted gases from entering the household environment. Please refer to NIBCO technical data sheets and catalogs for engineering and installation information. Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene (ABS) is resistant to a wide variety of materials ranging from sewage to commercial household chemical formulations and can be exposed to a wide temperature span. ABS is lightweight, safe to handle and easy to install. ABS DWV is joined by solvent cementing or threading and can easily be connected to steel, copper, or cast iron through the use of transition fittings. NIBCO® plastic fittings are backed by a 5-year limited warranty. Because of its longstanding reputation for innovation and precision in design and manufacturing, NIBCO is the preferred brand in the industry.

Nibco I565400 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Nibco 5885 ABS P-trap glue onto my existing ABS drain pipe, or do I need adapters?
Both ends of the 5885 are hubs sized for solvent weld, so schedule 40 ABS DWV pipe slips straight into the socket and cements in place. No threads, no slip nuts, no washers. If the line you are tying into is steel, copper, or cast iron, you need a transition fitting at that joint; the trap itself only mates to ABS pipe of the matching nominal size.
2) What pipe sizes does the Nibco 5885 P-trap come in?
Four sizes: 1-1/2 inch, 2 inch, 3 inch, and 4 inch. Size to the drain line you are trapping, not to the fixture tailpiece. The 1-1/2 is the lavatory and small fixture size, 2 inch covers sinks, showers, and floor drains, and the 3 and 4 inch are for larger commercial drains and mains work.
3) Can I use an ABS hub x hub P-trap under a sink instead of a slip joint trap?
A solvent welded hub x hub trap like the 5885 is a permanent, buried or concealed trap. Once it is cemented it does not come apart, which is why it is used in rough-in, floor drains, and in-wall work where nothing needs servicing. Under a lavatory where you want to break the trap to clear a clog or pull a snagged ring, use a slip joint or union style trap instead. Pick the hub x hub when the joint should never be disturbed.
4) Is the Nibco 5885 ABS trap approved for commercial buildings or just houses?
Both. It is listed for commercial and residential plumbing, and it carries NSF/ANSI Standard 14 with NSF U.P. certification, plus UL Listed 94V-0. It meets ASTM D2665, ASTM D3965, ASTM D2661 and D3311, and CSA B181.1, so it will pass in Canadian jurisdictions as well.
5) How hot can the water get through an ABS DWV P-trap before it is a problem?
Service range is -40F to 180F. That covers dishwasher and laundry discharge and normal hot water drainage. It does not cover a steam condensate line or boiler blowdown, where the discharge can exceed 180F. And the trap is drain, waste, and vent only, never pressurized: do not test or use the line with compressed air or other gases.
6) Can I mix an ABS trap into a PVC drain system?
No. The 5885 is ABS and it cements with ABS solvent cement to ABS pipe. ABS and PVC are different resins and should not be solvent welded to each other; if your line is white PVC, order the PVC trap in the matching size rather than trying to glue this one in. Where the two systems genuinely have to meet, that transition is made mechanically, not with cement.
7) Which Nibco part number do I order for a 2 inch ABS P-trap?
For the 2 inch, the Nibco manufacturer number is I565400. The rest of the 5885 range: I565300 for 1-1/2 inch, I565450 for 3 inch, and I565500 for 4 inch. Size is the only thing you specify on this trap, there is no handing, no finish, and no connection variant to choose.
8) Does a P-trap actually stop sewer gas from coming up the drain?
That is its whole job. The arc of the 5885 holds a standing column of wastewater, and that water seal blocks sewer gas from passing back up through the fixture into the building. The seal depends on the trap staying wet, so a floor drain or a fixture that sits unused for long stretches needs periodic priming or the seal evaporates and the gas comes through.
9) Do I need anything else besides the trap to finish the connection?
You need ABS solvent cement and the pipe itself. The 5885 arrives as the trap body alone: no cement, no nuts, no gaskets, nothing to assemble. Cut the pipe square, deburr, and cement into both hubs. Nibco publishes plastic fittings installation instructions covering the solvent welding procedure.
