The PVC DWV P-Trap features a hub x hub x cleanout with plug connection to provide a means for clearing potential clogs. The p-trap provides a water seal so that wastewater will automatically be trapped in the arc of the configuration, thereby preventing unwanted gases from entering the household environment. Please refer to NIBCO technical data sheets and catalogs for engineering and installation information. Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is the most frequently specified of all thermoplastic materials because of its light weight, durability, and cost-effectiveness. PVC DWV is easy to install and is joined by solvent cementing or threading. PVC fittings exhibit high corrosion and chemical resistance and will not rust, scale, pit or corrode. NIBCO® plastic fittings are backed by a 5-year limited warranty. Because of its longstanding reputation for innovation and precision in design and manufacturing, NIBCO is the preferred brand in the industry.

Nibco K560300 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Nibco 4884 P-trap connect to 1-1/2 inch PVC DWV pipe?
The 4884 P-trap comes in 1-1/2 inch and both inlet and outlet are hub, so it takes 1-1/2 inch Schedule 40 PVC DWV pipe pushed straight into the sockets. It is a solvent weld joint, not a slip nut connection, so you cement it in place with PVC primer and cement. If you're working under a sink with a chrome or plastic tubular slip-joint tailpiece, this is not the trap for that; this is a DWV system trap that gets glued into rigid pipe.
2) What does the cleanout with plug on a PVC P-trap actually do for me?
The cleanout is a threaded port at the bottom of the trap arc, closed with a plug. Because the trap is solvent welded in, you can't take the joint apart to clear a clog the way you would with a slip-nut trap. Pull the plug instead and you get at the low point of the trap where hair, grease and debris collect, then reseal it. On a floor sink, mop sink or any trap buried behind finish work, that port is the difference between a five minute clear and cutting pipe.
3) Can I use a PVC DWV P-trap on a hot water discharge line, like a commercial dishwasher or lab sink?
140 degrees F is the maximum service temperature for this PVC trap, so intermittent household hot water is fine but a commercial dishwasher, sterilizer or boiler blowdown discharge is not. Sustained flow above that softens PVC and the trap can deform or fail at the joints. For high temperature waste you need a different material entirely, not a hotter rated PVC fitting.
4) Is the Nibco 4884 trap approved for commercial plumbing, or residential only?
Both. The 4884 is listed for commercial and residential plumbing systems, and it carries NSF/ANSI Standard 14 and NSF U.P. certification, which is the drain, waste and vent listing inspectors look for on a plastic fitting. It is manufactured to ASTM D2665 and D3311, the standards that govern PVC DWV pipe and fitting patterns, so it dimensionally matches other Schedule 40 DWV fittings on the job.
5) What's the difference between a P-trap with a cleanout and a plain P-trap?
Same water seal, same job of blocking sewer gas. The difference is service access. A plain solvent weld P-trap has to be cut out if it plugs; the cleanout version gives you a plug you can remove at the bottom of the bend. Spend the small extra on the cleanout wherever the trap is hard to reach or the fixture sees debris, mop sinks, kitchen and janitor closets. Where the trap sits open under a lav and can be replaced in ten minutes, the plain version is fine.
6) Do I need anything besides the trap itself to install it?
The plug is included with the 4884, so the cleanout port ships closed. What you supply is PVC primer and solvent cement rated for DWV, and the connecting pipe. There are no washers, nuts or gaskets involved because this is a cemented joint, not a mechanical one. Do not air test the finished assembly; Nibco states plainly that these fittings are not to be tested or used with compressed air or other gases. Water test only.
7) Can I standardize on the Nibco 4884 across a building's DWV fixtures?
For 1-1/2 inch drains it works as a standard: made to ASTM D2665 and D3311, so the socket depths and fitting take-offs match any other Schedule 40 PVC DWV fitting on the building, whoever made it. That means one cement, one pipe size, one spare on the shelf across lavs and similar 1-1/2 inch fixtures. Sinks and floor drains running 2 inch waste need the 2 inch trap instead, not this one.
8) Will this trap corrode or rust in a commercial kitchen or a janitor closet?
PVC won't rust, scale, pit or corrode, which is why it holds up under the detergents, bleach and grease that eat metal traps in kitchens and custodial rooms. It is white PVC throughout, including the plug. The limit isn't chemical, it's heat: keep discharge at or below 140 degrees F.
9) Which Nibco part number do I order for the 1-1/2 inch PVC P-trap with cleanout?
Nibco 4884, manufacturer part number K560300, is the 1-1/2 inch hub x hub x cleanout P-trap with plug in PVC DWV. Order by that number and you get the solvent weld version; there is no slip joint or threaded variant of it.
