The ABS DWV P-Trap features a hub x hub x cleanout with plug connection to provide a means for clearing potential clogs. The DWV p-trap provides a water seal so that wastewater will automatically be trapped in the arc of the configuration, thereby preventing unwanted gases from entering the household environment. Please refer to NIBCO technical data sheets and catalogs for engineering and installation information. Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene (ABS) is resistant to a wide variety of materials ranging from sewage to commercial household chemical formulations and can be exposed to a wide temperature span. ABS is lightweight, safe to handle and easy to install. ABS DWV is joined by solvent cementing or threading and can easily be connected to steel, copper, or cast iron through the use of transition fittings. NIBCO® plastic fittings are backed by a 5-year limited warranty. Because of its longstanding reputation for innovation and precision in design and manufacturing, NIBCO is the preferred brand in the industry.

Nibco I560350 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What sizes does the Nibco 5884 ABS P-trap come in?
Two sizes: 1-1/2 inch (MPN I560300) and 2 inch (MPN I560350). Both are Schedule 40 ABS DWV. Pick the size to match the drain line you are tying into, 1-1/2 inch for a typical lavatory or tub run and 2 inch for a kitchen, laundry, or floor drain line.
2) How does the Nibco 5884 P-trap connect to the pipe, is it glued or threaded?
Solvent weld. Both ends are hubs sized to accept Schedule 40 ABS DWV pipe, and you cement them with ABS solvent cement. There are no slip nuts or washers on this trap, so it is not a serviceable compression joint like a chrome or PVC tubular trap under a sink. Access for clearing comes from the cleanout with plug instead.
3) Can I use an ABS P-trap with a cleanout on a commercial job?
Yes. The 5884 is listed for both commercial and residential plumbing and it carries CSA B181.1, ASTM D2665, ASTM D3965, ASTM D2661 and D3311, UL Listed 94V-0, NSF/ANSI Standard 14, and NSF U.P. certification. Those are the listings most commercial inspectors want to see on a DWV fitting.
4) Can I connect this ABS trap to existing cast iron or copper drain pipe?
Not directly. The hubs on the 5884 are made to take ABS DWV pipe with solvent cement. To tie into steel, copper, or cast iron you run a short piece of ABS out of the trap and use a transition fitting, such as a no-hub or shielded coupling, at the changeover point.
5) Will a black ABS trap glue to my white PVC drain line?
No. The 5884 is black ABS, and ABS and PVC are different materials that need different cements. If your existing line is PVC, either use a PVC trap or join the two with a transition cement or a mechanical transition coupling where local code permits it. Do not treat black and white pipe as interchangeable at a solvent joint.
6) Why choose a P-trap with a cleanout plug instead of a plain P-trap?
The cleanout tapping on the 5884 gives you a way to rod or snake the trap arc without cutting the trap out of the line. On a solvent welded ABS trap that matters, because a glued trap cannot be taken apart the way a slip-joint tubular trap can. For concealed traps, floor drains, mop sinks, and any run behind a wall or above a ceiling, the cleanout version is the one to spec.
7) What temperature range can this ABS DWV trap handle, and can I run hot water through it?
Service temperature is -40 F to 180 F, which covers normal hot water drainage from sinks, tubs, dishwashers and laundry. Keep in mind that is a service rating for drainage, not a pressure application. The trap must never be tested or used with compressed air or other gases.
8) Is the cleanout plug included with the Nibco 5884 trap?
Yes, the plug ships with the trap. The 5884 is catalogued as a P-trap with cleanout and plug, so you are not buying the plug separately. What you do need on hand is ABS solvent cement and cleaner for the two hub joints, plus a sealant or thread compound if your practice calls for one on the plug.
9) Does this trap keep sewer gas out of the building?
That is its job. The arc of the P-trap holds a water seal, so wastewater sits in the bend and blocks sewer gas from coming back up the fixture drain. Like any trap it needs a properly vented drain line so the seal is not siphoned out, and it needs regular use or periodic priming on drains that sit idle.
10) Is ABS strong enough for chemical drainage in a commercial kitchen or janitor closet?
ABS resists a wide range of materials from sewage through commercial and household chemical formulations, which is why it gets used on mop sinks and kitchen waste lines. It is also light and easy to cut and cement, so it hangs and installs faster than cast iron. For aggressive process or lab chemical waste, that is a different piping material entirely.
