The ABS DWV return bend features hub connections and a cleanout with plug to provide for a means of clearing potential clogs. The return bend connects the contiguous ends of two parallel pipes lying alongside or above one another and allows for a 180-degree change in the direction of flow. Please refer to NIBCO technical data sheets and catalogs for engineering and installation information. Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene (ABS) is resistant to a wide variety of materials ranging from sewage to commercial household chemical formulations and can be exposed to a wide temperature span. ABS is lightweight, safe to handle and easy to install. ABS DWV is joined by solvent cementing or threading and can easily be connected to steel, copper, or cast iron through the use of transition fittings. NIBCO® plastic fittings are backed by a 5-year limited warranty. Because of its longstanding reputation for innovation and precision in design and manufacturing, NIBCO is the preferred brand in the industry.

Nibco I532350 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What pipe sizes does the Nibco 5878 ABS DWV return bend come in?
The 5878 return bend is offered in 1-1/2 inch and 2 inch, ordered as MPN I532300 for the 1-1/2 inch and I532350 for the 2 inch. Both are Schedule 40 ABS DWV with hub sockets on each leg.
2) How do the hub ends on this ABS return bend get joined to the pipe?
Solvent weld. The two hubs are sockets that slip over Schedule 40 ABS DWV pipe and are cemented, not threaded. ABS DWV can also be tied into steel, copper or cast iron lines using transition fittings.
3) What is a return bend fitting actually used for in a DWV system?
It makes a full 180 degree turn, tying the ends of two parallel pipes running alongside or above one another so flow reverses direction. On the Nibco 5878 the third opening is a cleanout with plug, so once the bend is buried in a chase or wall you still have rod access to clear the low point where waste hangs up.
4) Can this ABS fitting be used on a commercial job, or is it residential only?
Both. The 5878 is listed for commercial and residential plumbing on drain, waste and vent service. It carries CSA B181.1, ASTM D2665, ASTM D3965, ASTM D2661 and D3311, UL Listed 94V-0, NSF/ANSI Standard 14, and NSF U.P. certification, which is the paperwork most specs and inspectors ask for on ABS DWV.
5) What temperature range can ABS DWV fittings handle, and can I pressure test them with air?
Service temperature runs -40 F to 180 F. Do not test or use the fitting with compressed air or any other gas. ABS DWV is a non-pressure drainage system, so testing is done with water. The material itself stands up to everything from sewage to common household chemical formulations.
6) Will this black ABS return bend match my existing PVC DWV lines?
No. The 5878 is black ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene), not PVC, and the two are different materials with different cements. If your existing drain lines are white or cream PVC, use a PVC fitting or a listed transition coupling rather than cementing ABS directly to PVC.
7) Does the Nibco 5878 come with the cleanout plug, or is that ordered separately?
The plug is included. The fitting ships as hub x hub x cleanout with plug, so there is nothing extra to buy to close off the cleanout opening. You will still need ABS solvent cement for the two hub joints.
8) Is a return bend the right choice, or should I be using two 90s instead?
A return bend does in one fitting what a pair of quarter bends does with a nipple between them, and it holds the two parallel runs at a fixed center distance with only two joints to cement instead of four. On the Nibco 5878 you also pick up a plugged cleanout at the turn, which a pair of 90s does not give you. If you need to control the offset distance between the two runs yourself, two separate bends give you that adjustment.
9) Is ABS DWV heavy to handle on an overhead install?
ABS is lightweight and safe to handle, which is part of why it goes up fast overhead compared with cast iron. Joints are solvent cemented rather than caulked or banded, so a single tradesman can set a 1-1/2 or 2 inch return bend without a helper.
