The PVC DWV return bend features a hub x hub connection. The return bend connects the contiguous ends of two parallel pipes lying alongside or above one another and allows for a 180-degree change in the direction of flow. Please refer to NIBCO technical data sheets and catalogs for engineering and installation information. Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is the most frequently specified of all thermoplastic materials because of its light weight, durability, and cost-effectiveness. PVC DWV is easy to install and is joined by solvent cementing or threading. PVC fittings exhibit high corrosion and chemical resistance and will not rust, scale, pit or corrode. NIBCO® plastic fittings are backed by a 5-year limited warranty. Because of its longstanding reputation for innovation and precision in design and manufacturing, NIBCO is the preferred brand in the industry.

Nibco K535400 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What pipe sizes does the Nibco 4879 return bend come in?
Four sizes: 1-1/2 inch (K535300), 2 inch (K535400), 3 inch (K537400) and 4 inch (K537450). Both ends are the same size, hub on each side, so you are matching one nominal pipe size straight through.
2) Is this a threaded fitting or does it glue on?
Both ends are hubs for solvent weld, so the pipe slips into the socket and you cement it. There are no threads on either end. If you need a threaded transition at that point in the run, you will want a separate adapter.
3) Will this PVC return bend work on a pressurized water line or with compressed air?
No. The 4879 is a DWV fitting for gravity drain, waste and vent only, and Nibco states plainly that it must not be tested or used with compressed air or other gases. Maximum service temperature is 140 degrees F, so it is also not suitable where sustained higher temperature discharge is expected.
4) Will this fit my existing Schedule 40 PVC DWV pipe?
Yes, provided the pipe is Schedule 40 PVC in a matching nominal size. The 4879 is a Schedule 40 PVC fitting with solvent weld hubs, so standard Schedule 40 PVC DWV pipe cut square and deburred slips into the socket. It will not accept ABS pipe with PVC cement, and it is not a fit for cast iron or copper without a separate transition coupling.
5) What is a PVC DWV return bend actually used for?
The Nibco 4879 return bend ties the ends of two parallel pipes together and turns the flow a full 180 degrees. It is catalogued as a 180 degree (1/2 bend) fitting, so instead of building the turn out of two 90s and a nipple, you drop in one piece. It is a drain, waste and vent fitting, not a pressure fitting.
6) Why use a return bend instead of two 90 degree elbows?
One fitting instead of two cuts the number of solvent joints in half at that turn, which is where DWV leaks tend to start, and it holds the two parallel pipe runs at a fixed spacing rather than leaving it to how long you cut the piece between the elbows. Where you need the spacing between the parallel legs to be different than the bend gives you, two 90s plus a length of pipe is still the way to do it.
7) What color is the fitting, and will it match the rest of my PVC DWV run?
White, which is the standard color for PVC DWV and will match white Schedule 40 PVC drainage pipe and fittings on the same system. If your existing waste lines are black, that is ABS and a different material that this fitting will not solvent weld to.
8) Is PVC going to corrode or scale in a waste line?
PVC does not rust, scale, pit or corrode, and it holds up to corrosive and chemical discharge, which is the usual reason it gets specified over metallic drainage in labs, kitchens and mechanical rooms. Keep it inside the 140 degree F service limit.
