1) What is a Nibco 4837 double elbow used for in a DWV system?
It's a PVC drain, waste and vent fitting with three hub sockets that turns two separate lines 90 degrees at one point, so you can pick up a pair of fixture drains or vents off a single fitting instead of stacking two elbows. Both bends are 90 degree (1/4 bend). Common use is back to back fixtures, like two lavatories on opposite sides of a wall.
2) What pipe sizes does the Nibco 4837 double elbow come in?
Five sizes: 1-1/2 inch, 2 inch, 3 inch, 4 inch, and a reducing 2 inch x 1-1/2 inch x 1-1/2 inch. The reducer is the one to order when a 2 inch drain line picks up two 1-1/2 inch fixture arms, so you don't need bushings at the branches.
3) Will the Nibco 4837 fit Schedule 40 PVC pipe?
Yes, the fitting is Schedule 40 and the hubs are sized to standard Schedule 40 PVC DWV pipe outside diameters in the nominal size you order. Dry fit before cementing; the socket should be a snug interference fit, not loose.
4) Can I use this PVC double elbow on a pressure water line?
No. This is a drain, waste and vent fitting only, for non-pressure gravity drainage and venting. It is not rated for pressure water supply, and Nibco states it must not be tested or used with compressed air or other gases.
5) Does the Nibco 4837 meet plumbing code standards for a permitted job?
It's manufactured to ASTM D2665 and D3311, certified to NSF/ANSI Standard 14, and carries NSF U.P. certification for drain, waste and vent use. Those are the listings inspectors look for on PVC DWV fittings in both residential and commercial work.
6) Is the Nibco 4837 hub connection solvent welded or threaded?
All three ends are hub (socket) connections that take the outside diameter of PVC DWV pipe and are joined by solvent cementing. No threads and no gaskets on this fitting. Use PVC primer and cement rated for DWV work; there's nothing to tighten after the joint is made.
7) What temperature can the Nibco 4837 PVC fitting handle?
Maximum service temperature is 140 degrees F. That covers normal lavatory, tub, laundry and kitchen waste. If the line will carry sustained high temperature discharge above that, such as from commercial dishwashing or boiler blowdown, PVC DWV is the wrong material for that branch.
8) Should I use a double elbow or two separate 90s for back to back fixtures?
The double elbow puts both turns in one body, which saves a length of pipe and two solvent joints in a tight wall cavity where there isn't room to stack fittings. Two separate quarter bends give you more freedom to offset the two branches vertically or rotate them independently. If the two fixture arms land at the same height and on the same centerline, the 4837 is the cleaner assembly.
9) What color is the Nibco 4837 and will it match my existing DWV fittings?
White PVC, which is the standard color for PVC DWV in North America and will match existing white PVC drainage lines. If the building is piped in black ABS, don't mix the two on solvent welded joints; that requires a transition coupling instead.
10) Does PVC DWV corrode in waste lines like metal pipe does?
No. PVC will not rust, scale, pit or corrode, and it holds up to the chemical exposure typical of waste and vent lines. That's the main reason property managers replacing failed cast iron or galvanized drainage go to PVC DWV on repipes.
