The ABS DWV double elbow features all hub connections and is used to change the direction of flow. Please refer to NIBCO technical data sheets and catalogs for engineering and installation information. Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene (ABS) is resistant to a wide variety of materials ranging from sewage to commercial household chemical formulations and can be exposed to a wide temperature span. ABS is lightweight, safe to handle and easy to install. ABS DWV is joined by solvent cementing or threading and can easily be connected to steel, copper, or cast iron through the use of transition fittings. NIBCO® plastic fittings are backed by a 5-year limited warranty. Because of its longstanding reputation for innovation and precision in design and manufacturing, NIBCO is the preferred brand in the industry.

Nibco I285400 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What sizes does the Nibco 5837 ABS DWV double elbow come in?
The Nibco 5837 double elbow is offered in 1-1/2 inch, 2 inch, 3 inch, and 4 inch all-same-size configurations, plus a reducing 2 inch x 1-1/2 inch x 1-1/2 inch version. Order part I285300 for 1-1/2 inch, I285400 for 2 inch, I285450 for the 2 x 1-1/2 x 1-1/2 reducer, I285550 for 3 inch, and I285600 for 4 inch.
2) How do the ends on the Nibco 5837 double elbow connect to pipe, and does it thread?
All three openings are hub (socket) ends made for solvent weld. You cut the ABS pipe square, prime/cement it, and push it into the hub. There are no threads on this fitting. If you need to tie into steel, copper, or cast iron, use a transition fitting rather than trying to thread these sockets.
3) Will the Nibco 5837 fit Schedule 40 ABS pipe?
Yes. The 5837 double elbow is a Schedule 40 DWV fitting, so it sockets over standard Schedule 40 ABS DWV pipe of the matching nominal size. It is not intended for pressure pipe systems.
4) Does the Nibco 5837 meet code for a commercial building drain, waste and vent system?
It is made to ASTM D2665, ASTM D3965, ASTM D2661 and D3311, and CSA B181.1, is UL Listed 94V-0, and carries NSF/ANSI Standard 14 with NSF U.P. certification. Nibco lists it for both commercial and residential plumbing use. Your local inspector still decides whether ABS is permitted in your jurisdiction.
5) I need two 1-1/2 inch branches off a 2 inch line. Is there a reducing version?
Yes, part I285450 is the 2 inch x 1-1/2 inch x 1-1/2 inch double elbow, so the run takes 2 inch pipe and both branches take 1-1/2 inch. That saves you two bushings. All three ends are still solvent weld hubs.
6) Will this black ABS fitting match the PVC drain lines already in my building?
The 5837 is black ABS, not white PVC. ABS and PVC are different materials and should not be solvent cemented to each other with standard ABS cement. If your existing drains are PVC, either use a PVC fitting or join the two materials with a mechanical transition coupling. Where the rest of the stack is already black ABS, this drops straight in.
7) What is a double elbow used for in a DWV system versus two separate 90s?
A double elbow is a single body with two 90 degree (1/4 bend) turns off a common run, so you can take two branches in opposite directions at one point instead of stacking two separate quarter bends with a short nipple between them. It saves a joint and keeps the assembly tight where space is limited, typically back-to-back fixtures such as two lavatories or tubs sharing a wall.
8) Can I use this ABS fitting on a hot waste line, and what temperature can it take?
Service range is -40 F to 180 F, which covers normal hot waste from a dishwasher or laundry standpipe in a drain line. ABS also resists everything from sewage to common household chemical formulations. Never test or use it with compressed air or other gases.
9) What else do I need to install the Nibco 5837 besides the fitting?
You need ABS solvent cement and a clean, square-cut, deburred pipe end. Nibco publishes plastic fittings installation instructions covering joint preparation and cure times. No gaskets, nuts or mounting hardware come with the fitting, and no primer step is required for ABS the way it is for PVC.
