The ABS DWV 90-degree elbow with high heel inlet features hub connections and is used to change the direction of flow. Please refer to NIBCO technical data sheets and catalogs for engineering and installation information. Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene (ABS) is resistant to a wide variety of materials ranging from sewage to commercial household chemical formulations and can be exposed to a wide temperature span. ABS is lightweight, safe to handle and easy to install. ABS DWV is joined by solvent cementing or threading and can easily be connected to steel, copper, or cast iron through the use of transition fittings. NIBCO® plastic fittings are backed by a 5-year limited warranty. Because of its longstanding reputation for innovation and precision in design and manufacturing, NIBCO is the preferred brand in the industry.

Nibco I445250 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What does the high heel inlet on the Nibco 5861 ABS elbow do, and when do I need one?
The high heel inlet is a third, smaller hub built into the heel (the outside of the bend) of a 90 degree quarter bend. It lets you pick up a vent or a secondary drain line right at the turn instead of adding a separate wye or sanitary tee downstream. Typical use is a closet bend or a fixture drop where the vent has to come off at the elbow because there's no room for another fitting. All three openings are hub, so everything solvent welds; there are no threads to make up.
2) Will the Nibco 5861 elbow fit my existing 3 inch ABS drain pipe?
It fits Schedule 40 DWV pipe. The hubs are sized for 3 inch on the run and either 2 inch or 1-1/2 inch on the heel inlet, and they're socket (hub) ends that slip over the pipe OD and solvent cement. If your existing line is Schedule 40 ABS DWV at those sizes, the fitting goes straight on. It is not a pressure fitting and not for supply lines.
3) Can I connect this ABS elbow to cast iron, copper, or steel drain pipe?
Not directly. Every opening on the 5861 is an ABS solvent weld hub, so it bonds to ABS pipe only. To get to cast iron, copper, or steel you use a transition fitting on the ABS side of the joint and make the changeover there. Same goes for tying into PVC: ABS and PVC are different cements and different materials, so you transition rather than cement one to the other.
4) Is the Nibco 5861 ABS elbow approved for commercial plumbing and does it meet code standards?
It is listed for both commercial and residential plumbing systems, and it carries the standards an inspector looks for on ABS DWV: ASTM D2665, ASTM D3965, ASTM D2661 and D3311, CSA B181.1, NSF/ANSI Standard 14, NSF U.P. Certified, and UL Listed 94V-0 for flammability. That combination is what gets it accepted in institutional and multi-family work as well as single-family.
5) What temperature can ABS DWV fittings handle, and can I run hot water waste through them?
Rated for continuous service from -40F to 180F. That covers dishwasher and laundry discharge, sink and tub waste, and outdoor or unheated crawl space runs in cold climates. What it does not cover is any use as a pressure line: ABS DWV must never be tested or used with compressed air or other gases. Pressure test drainage with water only.
6) Should I use a high heel inlet elbow or a regular 90 with a separate sanitary tee for the vent?
Use the high heel inlet quarter bend when the vent or branch has to be picked up at the turn and you don't have the vertical or horizontal room for a second fitting below it. Closet bends behind a wall are the classic case. A plain 90 plus a separate tee or wye is the choice when you have the space, because it gives you freedom in where the branch lands and keeps the parts count to common stock items. The 5861 buys you a fitting's worth of clearance.
7) Do I need anything besides the fitting to install a Nibco ABS DWV elbow?
You need ABS solvent cement and a clean, deburred pipe end. That's it for the joint itself: ABS is a one step cement, no primer required the way PVC pressure work often calls for, and there are no gaskets, nuts, or threads on this fitting. Nibco publishes plastic fittings installation instructions covering the cementing procedure. Handling is easy on this one because ABS is light enough to hold in position by hand while the joint sets.
8) What color is Nibco ABS DWV pipe fitting, and will it match my existing drain lines?
Black, which is the standard ABS DWV color and what you'll see on existing ABS drain, waste and vent piping in a building. If the lines you're tying into are white, that's PVC, not ABS, and this fitting is the wrong material for that system.
9) Will ABS drain fittings hold up to drain cleaners and sewage chemicals?
ABS resists a wide range of materials, from sewage through common commercial and household chemical formulations. For property managers and MRO buyers that means the routine stuff going down a building drain, cleaning products, waste from fixtures, is within what the material handles. Match the fitting to the pipe already in the riser and the chemical exposure is the same as the rest of the run.
