1) What is the high heel inlet on the Nibco 4861 elbow used for?
The high heel inlet is the extra side branch cast into the back of the 90 degree bend, so the elbow turns the main drain line and picks up a secondary fixture drain or vent at the same time. It's the fitting plumbers reach for at a closet bend or stack base where a lav or tub arm needs to tie in without adding a separate sanitary tee. All three openings are hub (socket) connections for solvent cemented PVC DWV pipe.
2) Will this Nibco elbow work on a hot water or pressure line?
No. The 4861 is a drain, waste and vent fitting only, with a maximum service temperature of 140 degrees F, and it must never be tested or used with compressed air or other gases. For pressure water service you need a pressure-rated fitting, not DWV.
3) Can I thread this PVC DWV elbow or does it have to be solvent welded?
All three ends on the 4861 are hub sockets, so it joins by solvent cementing PVC pipe into the socket. There are no threaded ports on this fitting. Nibco's PVC DWV line as a whole is joined by solvent cementing or threading, but on this hub x hub x hub configuration, cement is the method.
4) Does the Nibco 4861 elbow meet code for a commercial building drain system?
It's manufactured to ASTM D2665 and D3311, certified to NSF/ANSI Standard 14 and NSF U.P. Certified for potable-adjacent drain, waste and vent use. Nibco lists it for both commercial and residential plumbing systems. Local inspectors generally look for the ASTM D2665 marking on DWV PVC, and it is on this fitting.
5) Can I use this instead of a sanitary tee plus a 90 to pick up a branch drain?
That's the point of it. A high heel inlet elbow combines the 1/4 bend and the branch connection in one body, which saves a joint and the extra pipe length between fittings, useful in a tight joist bay or at a closet bend. Where the branch has to enter at a different elevation or angle than the elbow's heel allows, you're back to a separate sanitary tee and a 90.
6) Will PVC DWV fittings corrode or scale in a waste line over time?
PVC does not rust, scale, pit or corrode, and it holds up well to the chemicals that move through a waste line. That's a large part of why it's specified for DWV over metallic pipe in both commercial and residential work.
