Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene (ABS) is resistant to a wide variety of materials ranging from sewage to commercial household chemical formulations and can be exposed to a wide temperature span. 1) What is a low heel inlet elbow used for on a DWV stack?
The Nibco 5861-LH is a 90 degree (1/4 bend) ABS DWV elbow with a third inlet on the heel of the bend, low on the fitting. It turns the main drain line, typically the closet bend under a water closet, while the heel inlet picks up a secondary branch such as a lavatory or tub waste without cutting in a separate fitting. All three openings are hub, solvent weld.
2) What pipe sizes does the Nibco 5861-LH heel inlet elbow come in?
Three combinations: 3 x 3 x 2 inch (I446000), 3 x 3 x 1-1/2 inch (I446050), and 4 x 4 x 2 inch (I446150). The first two numbers are the run of the bend, the third is the heel inlet, so a 3 inch line can take either a 2 inch or 1-1/2 inch side branch, and a 4 inch line takes a 2 inch branch.
3) Will this ABS elbow join to my existing Schedule 40 ABS drain pipe?
Yes. It is Schedule 40 ABS DWV with hub ends joined by solvent cement, so it slips over standard Schedule 40 ABS DWV pipe of the matching size. Where the run changes to steel, copper, or cast iron, use a transition fitting rather than trying to cement directly to it.
4) Can I use this fitting on a pressure line or test the system with air?
No. This is a drain, waste and vent fitting only, non pressure. Nibco states specifically not to test or use ABS DWV with compressed air or other gases. Test with water.
5) What temperature range can ABS DWV fittings handle?
Service range is -40 F to 180 F, which covers normal sanitary drainage and dishwasher or laundry discharge. Sustained higher temperature waste streams need a different material.
6) Do I need a separate sanitary tee if I use the low heel inlet elbow?
Not for that one branch. The heel inlet takes the place of adding a tee downstream of the bend, so you make one fitting connection instead of two joints plus a short piece of pipe. You still need solvent cement and primer appropriate for ABS, which are not part of the fitting.
7) Is this fitting black ABS or white PVC?
Black ABS. It will not match a white PVC DWV system visually, and ABS and PVC are not cemented to each other as a matter of course. Keep the system in one material or use a proper transition coupling where they meet.
8) Which size do I order for a 3 inch closet bend picking up a 1-1/2 inch lavatory branch?
Order the 3 x 3 x 1-1/2 inch version, MPN I446050. If the branch is a 2 inch tub or shower waste on the same 3 inch line, take the 3 x 3 x 2 inch, MPN I446000.
