1) What is a 60-degree elbow used for in a DWV drain line?
A 60-degree elbow, also called a 1/6 bend, turns a drain, waste, or vent line through 60 degrees. The Nibco 4860 is the PVC DWV version, hub x hub, so both ends are socket fittings that take pipe slipped in and solvent cemented. Compared to a 90, the shallower turn keeps more flow momentum through the change of direction, which is why drainage layouts favour sweeping angles over hard corners. It is a drainage and vent fitting only, not a pressure fitting.
2) What pipe sizes does the Nibco 4860 PVC DWV 60-degree elbow come in?
Four sizes: 1-1/2, 2, 3 and 4 inch. Part numbers run K440300 for 1-1/2 inch, K440350 for 2 inch, K440400 for 3 inch and K440450 for 4 inch. Both hubs are the same size on each fitting, since it is a straight size elbow rather than a reducing one, so a 3 inch body takes 3 inch pipe on both ends.
3) Will the Nibco 4860 elbow fit standard schedule 40 PVC DWV pipe?
Yes. The 4860 is a schedule 40 DWV fitting, so the hubs are sized for schedule 40 PVC DWV pipe of the matching nominal size. Slip the pipe in dry first to check the socket bottoms out, then prime and solvent cement. It will not accept threaded pipe at the hub, those are plain socket ends.
4) Does the Nibco 4860 PVC elbow meet code for a commercial building drain system?
It is manufactured to ASTM D2665 and D3311, and carries NSF/ANSI Standard 14 certification along with NSF U.P. certification. Those are the standards a plumbing inspector looks for on PVC DWV fittings. The fitting is listed for both commercial and residential plumbing use.
5) How do I join a Nibco PVC DWV elbow, do I need glue or can it be threaded?
Solvent cement. Both ends are hub sockets, so the pipe slides in and is bonded with PVC primer and cement. There is no thread on either end of the 4860, so a threaded transition has to be made with a separate adapter fitting. Buy the primer and cement separately, none is included with the fitting.
6) Should I use a 60-degree elbow or a 45 for offsetting a drain stack?
It depends on how far you need to travel sideways over the vertical run you have. A 60-degree bend turns the line more sharply than a 45, so it gets you across faster in tight ceiling or wall space, but the steeper the turn the more it slows drainage flow. Where there is room, a 45 keeps the line sweeping. The Nibco 4860 covers the 60 degree, or 1/6 bend, position in 1-1/2 through 4 inch sizes. Check your local drainage code for which fittings are permitted on horizontal-to-horizontal changes of direction, that restriction varies.
7) Can I run a PVC DWV elbow on a line that carries hot water discharge?
Only up to 140 degrees F. That is the maximum service temperature for the 4860, so ordinary fixture and laundry discharge is fine, but a line seeing dishwasher, commercial kitchen or boiler blowdown discharge above that needs a higher temperature material such as CPVC or cast iron. Sustained temperature, not a brief slug, is what matters.
8) Will a PVC drain fitting corrode or scale in a waste line?
PVC does not rust, scale, pit or corrode, and it resists chemicals well, which is why it holds up in waste lines carrying detergents and cleaning chemistry. For a property manager replacing failing cast iron or galvanized drainage, that is the practical reason the switch gets made. The 4860 is white PVC.
