Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene (ABS) is resistant to a wide variety of materials ranging from sewage to commercial household chemical formulations and can be exposed to a wide temperature span. 1) What pipe sizes does the Nibco 5860 ABS DWV 60-degree elbow come in?
The 5860 hub x hub elbow is made in 1-1/2 inch (MPN I440300), 2 inch (I440350), 3 inch (I440400) and 4 inch (I440550). Both ends are hubs sized for Schedule 40 ABS DWV pipe, so pick the elbow to match the pipe OD you are running, not a reducing combination.
2) How do I join a Nibco ABS DWV hub x hub elbow to the pipe?
Solvent weld. Both ends are hub sockets, so the pipe slides into the fitting and is cemented with ABS solvent cement. There are no threads and no gaskets on this elbow. If you need to tie into steel, copper or cast iron, run a transition fitting at that point rather than trying to adapt at the elbow.
3) Can I use this ABS elbow on a commercial job, or is it residential only?
Both. Nibco lists the 5860 for commercial and residential plumbing in drain, waste and vent service. It carries CSA B181.1, ASTM D2665, D3965, D2661 and D3311, UL Listed 94V-0, NSF/ANSI Standard 14 and NSF U.P. certification, which is the paperwork most inspectors and spec writers ask for on ABS DWV.
4) Will this black ABS elbow match the PVC DWV already in my building?
No. The 5860 is black ABS, not white PVC, and the two materials are not solvent welded to each other with ordinary cement. If the existing system is PVC DWV, use a PVC fitting or make the change with a proper transition. Keeping the run in one material is the cleaner path for an inspector as well.
5) What is a 60-degree elbow used for in a DWV system, and when should I use a different bend instead?
A 60 degree elbow is a 1/6 bend, used where a 45 is too shallow and a 90 is too abrupt to hold the offset you need in a drain, waste or vent run. It changes direction of flow only. For a long-sweep change into horizontal drainage most codes push you toward a 45 or a long-sweep 90, so use the 60 where the geometry of the offset actually calls for it.
6) What temperature range will the Nibco 5860 ABS elbow handle?
Service range is -40F to 180F, which covers normal drainage and vent temperatures including intermittent hot discharge from sinks and laundry. It is not for continuous high-temperature process waste. One hard limit: never test or use ABS DWV with compressed air or other gases, water test only.

ABS resists a wide range of materials from sewage to common commercial and household chemical formulations, which is why it is used across restaurant, multi-family and institutional waste lines.
