1) What does spigot x hub mean on the Nibco 5860-2 60-degree ABS elbow, and how does it join?
One end of the 5860-2 is a spigot, sized like pipe so it drops into the hub of the next fitting, and the other end is a hub that accepts pipe or another spigot. Both ends are solvent weld, so you prime and cement them the way you would any ABS DWV joint. That spigot end is why it is also called a street elbow: it lets you go fitting to fitting without a short piece of pipe in between.
2) What pipe sizes does the Nibco 5860-2 ABS 60-degree elbow come in?
Four sizes: 1-1/2, 2, 3 and 4 inch. Part numbers run I441050 for 1-1/2 inch, I441100 for 2 inch, I441150 for 3 inch and I441200 for 4 inch. All are Schedule 40 ABS DWV, so they mate with standard Schedule 40 ABS drain pipe of the same nominal size.
3) Can I use a 60-degree ABS elbow on a pressure or water supply line?
No. The 5860-2 is a DWV fitting, for drain, waste and vent only, and it is not a pressure-rated fitting. It also must never be tested or used with compressed air or other gases. For water supply you need a pressure-rated system, not ABS DWV.
4) Will this ABS elbow connect to my existing cast iron or copper drain?
Not directly. ABS DWV fittings like this one are joined by solvent cementing or threading; to tie into steel, copper or cast iron you need a transition fitting between the two materials. Once you are in ABS, the 5860-2 cements straight onto Schedule 40 ABS pipe.
5) Does the Nibco 5860-2 ABS elbow meet plumbing code standards for an inspected job?
The fitting carries CSA B181.1, ASTM D2665, ASTM D3965, ASTM D2661 and D3311, UL Listed 94V-0, NSF/ANSI Standard 14 and NSF U.P. Certified. That is the marking set an inspector looks for on ABS DWV in both commercial and residential work.
6) When would I use a 60-degree elbow instead of a 45 or 90 on a drain line?
A 60-degree bend is a 1/6 bend, so it turns the line more than a 45 (1/8 bend) but keeps more flow velocity and less turbulence than a hard 90. It is the usual pick when a 45 does not reach the offset you need but a 90 would stall the flow or create a spot for solids to pack up. Same solvent weld ABS DWV system either way.
7) What temperature range can ABS DWV fittings handle?
Service temperature runs -40 F to 180 F for the 5860-2 elbow, which covers normal drain, waste and vent duty including intermittent hot discharge from fixtures and appliances. It is not for continuous high-temperature process waste above that range.
8) Will this elbow match the black ABS already in my building?
Yes, it is black ABS, the standard color for ABS DWV, so it blends with existing black drain and vent runs. If your building is white PVC DWV instead, this is the wrong material and you would want the PVC equivalent rather than cementing ABS to PVC.
9) Will ABS hold up to drain cleaners and chemical waste?
ABS resists a wide range of materials from raw sewage to common commercial and household chemical formulations, which is why it is used for building drain, waste and vent. For an unusual process chemical, check the chemical against the material before you commit the run.
