1) What is a spigot x hub ABS 45 elbow and when do I use it instead of a regular hub x hub 45?
A street elbow has one spigot end (sized like the outside of the pipe) and one hub end, so it slips straight into another fitting's hub without a stub of pipe between them. The Nibco 5806-2 is that street configuration in ABS DWV, giving a 45 degree turn (1/8 bend). Use it when two fittings need to meet tight, like coming off a closet bend or stacking offsets in a joist bay. If you have pipe on both sides, a plain hub x hub 45 is the fitting you want instead.
2) What pipe sizes does the Nibco 5806-2 ABS street elbow come in?
Six sizes: 1-1/4, 1-1/2, 2, 3, 4 and 6 inch. Order by MPN if you are matching a submittal: I044000 (1-1/4), I044050 (1-1/2), I044100 (2), I044150 (3), I044200 (4) and I044300 (6). All of them are Schedule 40 ABS DWV, so the size you pick has to match the DWV pipe already in the run.
3) How do I join this ABS 45 street elbow, and can I thread it?
Solvent weld. The 5806-2 is a solvent cement fitting, so the spigot end cements into the mating fitting's hub and the hub end takes the pipe. ABS DWV can also be joined by threading, and it ties into steel, copper or cast iron through transition fittings. You will need ABS cement on the truck; no primer step like PVC, but the joint is still a one-shot alignment, so dry fit the angle first.
4) Can I use a Nibco ABS DWV elbow on a pressure or water supply line?
No. This is a drain, waste and vent fitting only. It is not a pressure fitting, and Nibco is explicit that it must not be tested or used with compressed air or other gases. Air testing a DWV plastic system is how these fittings fail violently. Water test or use the test method your inspector accepts.
5) Is this Nibco ABS fitting approved for commercial work and code inspection?
The 5806-2 carries NSF/ANSI Standard 14 and is NSF U.P. Certified, is UL Listed 94V-0 for flammability, and is made to ASTM D2665, ASTM D3965, ASTM D2661 and D3311, plus CSA B181.1 for Canadian jobs. It is used in both commercial and residential plumbing. Those are the markings an inspector looks for on the fitting body.
6) Can I mix this black ABS elbow with white PVC DWV pipe?
Not with ordinary solvent cement. The 5806-2 is black ABS, and ABS and PVC are different plastics that do not solvent weld to each other with standard cement. Match the fitting to the pipe material already in the building: black to black. Where you genuinely have to cross from ABS to PVC, that is a mechanical or transition joint, not a cemented socket.
7) What temperature range can ABS DWV fittings handle, and will they work on a laundry or dishwasher drain?
Rated for continuous service from -40F to 180F. That covers hot discharge from a residential dishwasher or washing machine drain, and it is why ABS holds up in unheated crawl spaces and attics in cold climates. Sustained flow above 180F, like a commercial sanitizing dishwasher or a boiler blowdown, needs a different material.
8) Do I need two 45 elbows instead of a 90 on a DWV drain offset?
Often yes. A pair of 45 degree bends makes a gentler offset than a single 90 and keeps flow moving, which is why 1/8 bends are the usual choice for horizontal changes of direction on waste lines. Ordering the street version of one of the two lets them couple directly with no pipe nipple between, which is what saves you room in a tight bay.
9) Will ABS drain fittings hold up against drain cleaners and sewage in a rental property?
ABS resists a wide range of materials from sewage through common commercial and household chemical formulations, which is the reason it is standard on residential and light commercial waste arms.
