1) What pipe sizes does the Nibco 5806 ABS DWV 45-degree elbow come in?
The 5806 hub x hub 45-degree elbow is offered in 1-1/4, 1-1/2, 2, 3, 4, and 6 inch. Both ends are the same size on every one of them, so it's a straight-size fitting, not a reducing bend. Common MPNs: 1-1/2 inch is I042550, 2 inch is I042600, 3 inch is I042650, 4 inch is I042700.
2) Is the Nibco 5806 elbow threaded or does it glue on?
It glues. Both ends are hubs (socket) for solvent weld, so the pipe slips inside the fitting and is joined with ABS cement. There are no threads on either end. If you need to transition to a threaded, steel, copper, or cast iron line, use a transition fitting at that point rather than trying to thread this elbow.
3) Can I use the Nibco 5806 ABS elbow on a commercial building, or is it residential only?
Both. The 5806 is specified for commercial and residential plumbing on drain, waste, and vent systems. It carries CSA B181.1, ASTM D2665, ASTM D3965, ASTM D2661 and D3311, UL Listed 94V-0, NSF/ANSI Standard 14, and NSF U.P. Certified, which is the paperwork an inspector or a spec writer on an institutional job will be looking for.
4) Can I use an ABS DWV elbow on a hot water or pressure line?
No. The 5806 is a drain, waste, and vent fitting only, rated for service from -40F to 180F, and it must never be tested or used with compressed air or other gases. It is not a pressure fitting. For supply or pressure work you need a different material and pressure-rated fitting entirely.
5) Will a black ABS elbow glue to my existing white PVC drain pipe?
Not with ordinary ABS cement. The 5806 is black ABS, and ABS and PVC are different plastics; joining them takes a transition method rather than a standard solvent weld. Where your building already runs white PVC DWV, the clean answer is to buy the PVC version of the 45 and keep the material consistent through the run.
6) Should I use a 45-degree elbow or a 90 on a drain line?
A 45, also called a 1/8 bend, turns the flow half as sharply as a 90. On horizontal drainage runs and at the base of stacks, two 45s (or a 45 into a long-turn fitting) keep solids moving where a hard 90 tends to catch them. Use the 45 wherever you're offsetting around a joist, beam, or wall and don't need a full right-angle turn. Reach for a 90 only where the geometry forces it and your local code permits it on that part of the system.
7) Do I need anything besides the elbow to make up the joint on a Nibco 5806?
The elbow ships as the fitting alone. To make the joint you'll need ABS solvent cement (one-step, no separate primer required for ABS) and clean, square-cut, deburred pipe ends.
