The ABS DWV return bend features a hub x hub connection. The return bend connects the contiguous ends of two parallel pipes lying alongside or above one another and allows for a 180-degree change in the direction of flow. Please refer to NIBCO technical data sheets and catalogs for engineering and installation information. Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene (ABS) is resistant to a wide variety of materials ranging from sewage to commercial household chemical formulations and can be exposed to a wide temperature span. ABS is lightweight, safe to handle and easy to install. ABS DWV is joined by solvent cementing or threading and can easily be connected to steel, copper, or cast iron through the use of transition fittings. NIBCO® plastic fittings are backed by a 5-year limited warranty. Because of its longstanding reputation for innovation and precision in design and manufacturing, NIBCO is the preferred brand in the industry.

Nibco I535400 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) How do you join a hub x hub ABS return bend to the pipe?
Both ends are solvent weld hubs, so the pipe slips into the socket and is joined with ABS solvent cement. No threads, no gaskets, no clamps. Nothing on the fitting is included for the joint itself, so you supply the cement (and primer where your inspector requires it). If you need to tie into steel, copper or cast iron, that is done with a transition fitting, not with this bend.
2) What is a return bend actually used for in a DWV system?
It makes a 180 degree change of direction, a full 1/2 bend, joining the ends of two parallel pipes running alongside or above each other. That is the job: reverse the flow back on itself in one fitting instead of stacking two 90s and a nipple. If you only need a 90 or a 45, this is the wrong fitting.
3) Can this ABS return bend be used on a pressure line or tested with air?
No. It is a drain, waste and vent fitting only, and the instructions are explicit that it must not be tested or used with compressed air or other gases. Water test it. For pressure service you need a pressure-rated system, not ABS DWV.
4) Is the Nibco 5879 return bend approved for commercial jobs and does it carry NSF certification?
It is listed for both commercial and residential plumbing, and it carries NSF/ANSI Standard 14 with NSF U.P. certification. The fitting is also UL Listed 94V-0 and made to ASTM D2665, D3965, D2661 and D3311, plus CSA B181.1 for Canadian work.
5) What sizes does the Nibco 5879 ABS DWV return bend come in?
The 5879 return bend is offered in 1-1/2 inch, 2 inch, 3 inch and 4 inch pipe sizes, all hub x hub. Part numbers run I537250 for 1-1/2 inch, I535400 for 2 inch, I537400 for 3 inch and I537450 for 4 inch.
6) What temperature range can ABS DWV fittings handle?
Service temperature runs from -40 F to 180 F. That covers normal sanitary drainage and typical dishwasher or laundry discharge, but it rules out anything dumping sustained high-temperature process waste above 180 F.
7) Will this match the black ABS already in my building, or is it PVC?
It is ABS, black, so it matches existing black ABS DWV piping. Do not mix it with white PVC DWV on a solvent-cemented joint; that combination needs a transition cement or a mechanical coupling, and many jurisdictions will not accept the cemented version.
