The ABS DWV swivel drum trap features a hub x hub x cleanout with plug connection to provide a means for clearing potential clogs. The drum trap also provides a water seal so that wastewater will automatically be trapped in the configuration, thereby preventing unwanted gases from entering the household environment. 1) What size pipe does the Nibco 5891 drum trap connect to?
The 5891 swivel drum trap is made in a 1-1/2" x 3" x 6" configuration, so the inlet and outlet hubs take 1-1/2 inch ABS DWV pipe. Both ends are hub, meaning the pipe slips inside and is solvent cemented. It's Schedule 40 sizing, so standard 1-1/2 inch ABS DWV pipe drops straight in.
2) How is the Nibco 5891 ABS drum trap joined, and can it tie into copper or cast iron drain lines?
It's a solvent weld (cement) joint at both hubs, not threaded and not compression. ABS DWV can be tied into steel, copper, or cast iron lines, but only through transition fittings; you can't cement ABS directly to metal. Order those transition fittings separately.
3) Is the Nibco 5891 drum trap approved for commercial jobs and potable-adjacent work?

The swivel body lets you line up the inlet and outlet to the existing piping instead of rebuilding the run. Check that your local code still permits drum traps before you commit.
6) What temperature range can the Nibco 5891 ABS trap handle, and can I use it on a hot waste line?
Service temperature runs -40 F to 180 F. That covers normal tub, sink, and laundry discharge. It is DWV only, drain, waste and vent, so no pressure service, and it must never be tested or used with compressed air or other gases.
