The ABS DWV P-Trap features a union joint and a hub x slip joint with chrome nut connection. The P-Trap provides a water seal so that wastewater will automatically be trapped in the arc of the configuration, thereby preventing unwanted gases from entering the household environment. Please refer to NIBCO technical data sheets and catalogs for engineering and installation information. Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene (ABS) is resistant to a wide variety of materials ranging from sewage to commercial household chemical formulations and can be exposed to a wide temperature span. ABS is lightweight, safe to handle and easy to install. ABS DWV is joined by solvent cementing or threading and can easily be connected to steel, copper, or cast iron through the use of transition fittings. NIBCO® plastic fittings are backed by a 5-year limited warranty. Because of its longstanding reputation for innovation and precision in design and manufacturing, NIBCO is the preferred brand in the industry.

Nibco I600390 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Nibco 5892-C ABS P-trap connect to my existing 1-1/2 inch tailpiece and drain line?
The 5892-C is a hub x slip joint trap, so one side solvent cements into 1-1/2 inch Schedule 40 ABS hub and the other side takes a slip joint with a chrome nut over the tailpiece. Two sizes are built: straight 1-1/2 inch, and a 1-1/2 x 1-1/4 inch that lets a 1-1/4 inch tailpiece land in a 1-1/2 inch drain. If your existing line is glued ABS on the wall side and a slip nut at the fixture, this is the configuration you want. If both ends of your rough-in are slip joint, this trap is not the one, since the hub end has to be cemented.
2) What is the difference between the two Nibco 5892-C P-trap sizes, 1-1/2 inch and 1-1/2 x 1-1/4 inch?
Both are the same ABS DWV P-trap with a union joint. The straight 1-1/2 inch, MPN I600390, is 1-1/2 inch on both ends. The reducing version, MPN I600400, takes a 1-1/4 inch tailpiece on the slip joint side while keeping the 1-1/2 inch hub on the drain side. Lavatory tailpieces are commonly 1-1/4 inch and kitchen sinks 1-1/2 inch, so the reducing trap is the usual pick under a bathroom sink feeding a 1-1/2 inch waste arm.
3) Can I service or swap the trap later without cutting the ABS drain line?
That is what the union joint buys you. The 5892-C is a P-trap with a union joint, so the trap body separates at the union and at the slip nut for cleaning a stoppage or pulling the trap, and the cemented hub connection stays in the wall or floor untouched. On a plain cemented trap you would be cutting pipe to get it out.
4) Is an ABS P-trap allowed on a commercial job, or do I need something else?
Nibco lists the 5892-C for both commercial and residential plumbing, on DWV drain, waste and vent service. It is built to ASTM D2661 and D3311 for ABS DWV fittings, ASTM D2665, ASTM D3965, CSA B181.1, NSF/ANSI Standard 14, NSF U.P. Certified, and UL Listed 94V-0. That is the paperwork most inspectors and spec writers look for on a plastic DWV trap. What it will not do is pressure work: it is drainage only, and Nibco says not to test or use it with compressed air or other gases.
5) Will an ABS P-trap handle hot water and drain cleaner from a commercial kitchen or janitor sink?
Service temperature on the 5892-C runs -40 F to 180 F, which covers hot dishwater and normal sanitary discharge but not sustained boiling or steam condensate. The ABS body resists everything from sewage to common household chemical cleaners. For a line that regularly sees water above 180 F, go to a metal trap instead.
6) Can I tie a Nibco ABS trap into an existing cast iron or copper drain?
Not directly. ABS DWV joins by solvent cement or threading, and connecting to steel, copper, or cast iron takes a transition fitting at the changeover. Plan that adapter into the takeoff. Note also that ABS cement and PVC cement are not interchangeable, so if the existing plastic is white PVC rather than black ABS you need the correct transition cement or fitting there too.
7) Do I need to buy the slip joint nut and washer separately for the Nibco 5892-C trap?
No. The chrome nut is part of the 5892-C assembly, on the slip joint side. What you supply is ABS solvent cement for the hub end and, if the tailpiece diameter does not match, a tailpiece extension. Order the 1-1/2 x 1-1/4 inch version rather than adding a reducer if the fixture side is 1-1/4 inch.
8) Does the Nibco 5892-C P-trap match the black drain piping already under my sinks?
It is black ABS, the same material and color as standard black DWV pipe, so it blends with the rest of a black ABS drain assembly. If the exposed piping under your fixtures is white PVC or chrome, this trap will read as a different part visually, and the cemented joint would need a transition to PVC in any case.
9) Why use a P-trap under a fixture at all instead of just running the drain straight down?
The arc of a P-trap holds a standing water seal that blocks sewer gas from coming back up through the fixture. The 5892-C traps wastewater in that bend automatically each time the fixture drains. Every fixture on a sanitary drain needs one, and if a trap dries out from disuse the gas smell that follows is the seal being gone, not a failed fitting.
