Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene (ABS) is resistant to a wide variety of materials ranging from sewage to commercial household chemical formulations and can be exposed to a wide temperature span. 1) What size ABS pipe does the Nibco 5816 cleanout adapter fit?
The 5816 cleanout adapter comes in 1-1/2, 2, 3, 4 and 6 inch pipe sizes, all Schedule 40 ABS DWV. The spigot end is sized to drop into the hub of the matching pipe or fitting, so a 3 inch adapter goes into a 3 inch hub. Order by the pipe size you are branching off, not by the plug size.
2) How does the Nibco 5816 cleanout adapter connect - is it glued or threaded?
Solvent weld. The 5816 has a spigot inlet that cements into a hub, and the cleanout plug itself threads into the body so it can be pulled for rodding. So you cement the adapter into the line once, and the plug stays serviceable. ABS DWV is joined by solvent cementing or threading; use ABS cement, not PVC cement, on the spigot joint.
3) Can I use an ABS cleanout adapter to tie into an existing cast iron or copper drain line?
Not directly. The 5816 is spigot by cleanout, both plastic connections, so it mates to ABS DWV pipe and fittings. To reach steel, copper or cast iron you need a transition fitting at that point; the ABS side of the system then runs to the cleanout as normal. Common on a remodel where you are adding a rodding point to an older stack.
4) Is the Nibco 5816 ABS cleanout approved for commercial buildings, or is it residential only?
Both. The 5816 is listed for commercial and residential plumbing use, and it carries CSA B181.1, ASTM D2665, ASTM D3965, ASTM D2661 and D3311, UL Listed 94V-0, NSF/ANSI Standard 14 and NSF U.P. Certified. That is the paperwork an institutional or MRO spec reviewer usually wants on a DWV fitting.
5) What temperature can an ABS DWV cleanout handle - will dishwasher or laundry discharge hurt it?
Service range is -40F to 180F, which covers normal dishwasher, washing machine and kitchen discharge in a DWV line. It is a drain, waste and vent fitting only, so it is not for pressure service, and it must never be tested or used with compressed air or other gases. Fill and test with water.
6) Does the Nibco 5816 cleanout come with the plug, or do I order that separately?
The plug is included. The 5816 is sold as a cleanout adapter with plug, so one part number gives you the body and the threaded closure. All you add on the job is ABS cement and primer per the manufacturer's plastic fittings instructions.
