1) What size pipe does the Nibco 5818 ABS DWV plug fit?
The 5818 plug is made in 1-1/4, 1-1/2, 2, 2-1/2, 3, 4 and 6 inch sizes, so it covers everything from a lavatory arm up to a 6 inch building drain. It's a male NPT thread, so the size refers to the female threaded fitting or cleanout adapter it screws into, not to a socket that slips over pipe. Order by the thread size of the tapped opening you're closing off.
2) Does the Nibco 5818 plug glue in or thread in?
Threads in. The 5818 has a male NPT (MIPT) end, so it screws into a female threaded fitting, cleanout body or threaded adapter. There's no solvent weld socket on it. If the opening you need to cap is a plain hub socket, you want a solvent weld ABS DWV plug or a cap instead, or a spigot x FIPT cleanout adapter to give yourself threads first.
3) Can I use an ABS DWV plug on a pressure or water supply line?
No. The 5818 is a drain, waste and vent fitting, Schedule 40 ABS, with no pressure rating behind it. It belongs in gravity DWV piping only, not on potable water, not on a supply line, and Nibco is explicit that it must never be tested or used with compressed air or other gases. For a pressure test on a DWV system, water only.
4) Is the Nibco 5818 ABS plug approved for use under plumbing code?
It carries NSF/ANSI Standard 14 and is NSF U.P. Certified, and it's manufactured to ASTM D2665, D3965, D2661 and D3311 plus CSA B181.1 for Canadian work. It's also UL Listed 94V-0 for flammability. That's the set of markings an inspector on a commercial or institutional job looks for on ABS DWV, and it applies across all seven sizes.
5) Will an ABS plug hold up in a cleanout that gets opened for rodding?
It's the normal choice for one. ABS handles everything from sewage to household and commercial chemical cleaners, and the service range is -40F to 180F, which covers a hot dishwasher or laundry discharge dumping into the line. Thread it with a compatible pipe thread sealant rather than overtightening; ABS threads will split if you crank on them like steel. The male thread also means it backs out cleanly for the next service call.
6) Can I thread an ABS plug into a cast iron or steel cleanout?
The 5818 is a straight NPT male thread, so mechanically it engages any correctly tapped NPT female opening, and Nibco states ABS DWV connects to steel, copper or cast iron through transition fittings. Two cautions on metal: don't use it to chase out damaged or rusted iron threads, and hand tighten plus a modest turn with sealant, because a metal body will happily crush a plastic plug. Where the iron threads are chewed up, cut the hub out and adapt to plastic instead.
7) Should I plug a future stub-out or cap it?
For a stub left for a future fixture or a future branch, the threaded 5818 is the one to use. A solvent welded cap seals the pipe permanently and has to be cut off when someone comes back to make the connection; the male NPT plug backs out of a threaded fitting or adapter and leaves the opening usable. That's the reason to set a female threaded fitting at the rough-in in the first place.
8) Will a black ABS plug match my existing DWV piping, or do I need PVC?
The 5818 is black ABS, which matches black ABS DWV systems. White PVC DWV is a different material and the two are not solvent welded to each other. Since this plug is threaded rather than cemented, it will physically thread into a PVC female NPT opening, but for anything a jurisdiction inspects, match the system material and check what your local code allows on mixed materials. Residential and commercial DWV both use it.
9) What is the Nibco part number for a 2 inch ABS DWV threaded plug?
Nibco's 5818 in 2 inch is part number I177250. The rest of the range: 1-1/4 inch is I177150, 1-1/2 inch is I177200, 2-1/2 inch is I177300, 3 inch is I177350, 4 inch is I177400 and 6 inch is I178500. Useful if you're standardizing a cleanout plug across a portfolio and want one number on the requisition.
10) Does an ABS DWV plug freeze or crack in an unheated crawlspace or exterior wall?
Service range on the 5818 runs down to -40F, so cold alone won't hurt the fitting in an unconditioned crawlspace, attic or garage. What splits piping in those spaces is standing water freezing inside the line, not the plug material, so the usual rule still applies: keep the run draining and don't leave a trapped column of water sitting above a plugged opening in freezing conditions.
