The ABS DWV closet flange features a male NPT thread connection. The closet flange is secured to the floor of the dwelling so that a toilet can be affixed to it and allow for a pipe connection (under the floor) to continue the piping for evacuation of the used water. Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene (ABS) is resistant to a wide variety of materials ranging from sewage to commercial household chemical formulations and can be exposed to a wide temperature span. ABS is lightweight, safe to handle and easy to install. ABS DWV is joined by solvent cementing or threading and can easily be connected to steel, copper, or cast iron through the use of transition fittings. 1) Will the Nibco 5851-4 closet flange thread onto a 3 inch ABS DWV pipe?
The 5851-4 is a 4 inch x 3 inch closet flange with a male NPT thread, so it threads into a 3 inch female threaded fitting and presents the 4 inch flange face up at the floor for the toilet. It is not a solvent weld socket, so it will not slip over the outside of a 3 inch pipe end. If your stack terminates in a plain ABS pipe end with no female threads, you need a hub style closet flange instead.
2) Can I use an ABS closet flange on a PVC drain line?
ABS and PVC should not be solvent cemented to each other, but the 5851-4 gets around that because it joins by thread, not by cement. The male NPT connection lets the black ABS flange thread into a PVC female threaded fitting, which is the usual way plumbers cross material types on a closet bend. Nibco also notes ABS DWV connects to steel, copper, or cast iron through transition fittings.
3) Is the Nibco 5851-4 closet flange approved for commercial buildings, or is it residential only?

4) Is a threaded closet flange or a glue in closet flange better for a toilet replacement?
Threaded is the choice when there is already a female threaded fitting in the floor or when you are tying ABS into another material, and it lets you back the flange out later without cutting pipe. The 5851-4 is that type, with a male NPT tail. A solvent cement flange is the choice on a new ABS rough in where you are gluing the whole run anyway, since a cemented joint has no thread sealant to maintain. Both land the closet bolts the same way once the flange is fastened to the floor.
5) Will an ABS closet flange handle hot water or a steam cleaned floor drain line?
Service range on this ABS DWV flange is -40 F to 180 F, which covers normal fixture discharge including hot water from a lavatory or tub tied into the same branch. It is a drain, waste and vent fitting only. Do not pressure test it or run it with compressed air or other gases.
