The ABS DWV closet flange features a spigot connection. The closet flange is secured to the floor of the dwelling so that a toilet can be affixed to it and allow for a pipe connection (under the floor) to continue the piping for evacuation of the used water. Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene (ABS) is resistant to a wide variety of materials ranging from sewage to commercial household chemical formulations and can be exposed to a wide temperature span. ABS is lightweight, safe to handle and easy to install. ABS DWV is joined by solvent cementing or threading and can easily be connected to steel, copper, or cast iron through the use of transition fittings. NIBCO® plastic fittings are backed by a 5-year limited warranty. 1) Will the Nibco 5851-2 closet flange fit 4 inch ABS pipe or 3 inch?
Both. The 5851-2 is a 4 x 3 inch closet flange, so the 4 inch flange body steps down to a 3 inch connection. That is the combination most toilet rough-ins use: a 4 inch flange at the floor over a 3 inch drain line below. It is Schedule 40 ABS DWV.
2) Can I glue an ABS closet flange to PVC drain pipe?
No. The 5851-2 is ABS and solvent welds to ABS only. ABS cement and PVC cement are different systems and an ABS-to-PVC solvent joint is not an approved connection in most jurisdictions. If the drain below the floor is PVC, use a PVC closet flange or a mechanical transition coupling. ABS DWV does connect to steel, copper, or cast iron through transition fittings.

Service range is -40 F to 180 F. That covers normal waste and vent duty including hot water discharge from a nearby fixture. What it does not cover is pressure testing: do not test or use ABS DWV fittings with compressed air or other gases. Water test only.
