The ABS DWV closet flange features a plastic coated steel flange and a spigot connection. The closet flange is secured to the floor of the dwelling so that a toilet can be affixed to it and allow for a pipe connection (under the floor) to continue the piping for evacuation of the used water. Please refer to NIBCO technical data sheets and catalogs for engineering and installation information. Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene (ABS) is resistant to a wide variety of materials ranging from sewage to commercial household chemical formulations and can be exposed to a wide temperature span. ABS is lightweight, safe to handle and easy to install. ABS DWV is joined by solvent cementing or threading and can easily be connected to steel, copper, or cast iron through the use of transition fittings. NIBCO® plastic fittings are backed by a 5-year limited warranty. Because of its longstanding reputation for innovation and precision in design and manufacturing, NIBCO is the preferred brand in the industry.

Nibco I355490 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will the Nibco 5851-2-A closet flange glue onto 4 inch ABS DWV pipe?
The 5851-2-A is a solvent weld fitting with a spigot end, so it goes together with ABS DWV pipe and fittings using ABS solvent cement, no threads and no gaskets. It is built to Schedule 40 dimensions. The spigot end means it enters the hub of the fitting or pipe below it rather than accepting pipe inside a socket, so plan the closet bend or riser under the floor for a hub or a coupling.
2) Can I use an ABS closet flange in a commercial restroom, or is it residential only?
Both. The 5851-2-A is listed for commercial and residential plumbing, and it carries CSA B181.1, ASTM D2665, ASTM D3965, ASTM D2661 and D3311, UL Listed 94V-0, and NSF/ANSI Standard 14. For an institutional or facility spec, those are the marks the inspector looks for on a DWV fitting.
3) Can I connect an ABS closet flange to existing cast iron or copper drain pipe?
Not directly. ABS DWV joins by solvent cementing or threading; to tie into steel, copper, or cast iron you need a transition fitting between them. On a remodel where the closet bend is cast iron, plan on a transition or a shielded coupling below the floor, then cement the ABS spigot into that.
4) What does the adjustable ring on this ABS closet flange actually do?
The metal ring on the 5851-2-A rotates independently of the ABS body, so the closet bolts can be swung to line up square with the wall after the flange is cemented and set in the floor. That is the fix for a rough-in that came in a few degrees off. The ring is plastic coated steel, which is stiffer under the toilet bolts than an all-plastic ring.
5) What temperature range can an ABS DWV closet flange handle?
Service range on the 5851-2-A is -40 F to 180 F. That covers ordinary sanitary drainage and normal fixture discharge. Do not pressure test or use it with compressed air or other gases; DWV ABS is a gravity drainage material only.
6) Will ABS hold up to drain cleaners and sewage in a rental property?
ABS resists a wide range of materials from sewage through common household chemical formulations, which is why it is a standard DWV material in multi-family and rental work. It is black throughout, lightweight, and cements fast, so a flange swap is a short job.
