The ABS DWV closet flange features a hub connection. The closet flange is secured to the floor of the dwelling so that a toilet can be affixed to it and allow for a pipe connection (under the floor) to continue the piping for evacuation of the used water. Please refer to NIBCO technical data sheets and catalogs for engineering and installation information. Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene (ABS) is resistant to a wide variety of materials ranging from sewage to commercial household chemical formulations and can be exposed to a wide temperature span. ABS is lightweight, safe to handle and easy to install. ABS DWV is joined by solvent cementing or threading and can easily be connected to steel, copper, or cast iron through the use of transition fittings. NIBCO® plastic fittings are backed by a 5-year limited warranty. Because of its longstanding reputation for innovation and precision in design and manufacturing, NIBCO is the preferred brand in the industry.

Nibco I355300 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will the Nibco 5851 closet flange glue onto 4 inch ABS drain pipe?
Yes. The 5851 is a hub (H Hub) closet flange with a solvent weld end connection, sized to Schedule 40, so it slips over 4 inch ABS DWV pipe and cements in place. It is ABS, so it takes ABS cement, not PVC cement. The 4 x 3 inch version is the one to order when the closet bend below the floor is 3 inch pipe.
2) What is the difference between the Nibco 5851 4 inch and the 4 x 3 inch reducing closet flange?
Both give you the same 4 inch toilet flange at floor level. The straight 4 inch, MPN I355300, has a 4 inch hub that glues over 4 inch pipe. The reducing 4 x 3 inch, MPN I355250, has a 3 inch hub, so it drops onto 3 inch ABS while still presenting the standard 4 inch closet opening. Pick by what is sticking up through the floor, not by the toilet.
3) Can I use an ABS closet flange on PVC drain pipe?
No. The 5851 is an ABS DWV flange and solvent welds to ABS pipe. Gluing ABS to PVC with ordinary cement is not a joint anyone should trust under a toilet. If the stack below the floor is PVC, use a PVC DWV closet flange, or make the changeover with a transition fitting. ABS does connect out to steel, copper, or cast iron through transition fittings.
4) Is the Nibco 5851 ABS closet flange approved for commercial buildings, or is it residential only?
Both. The 5851 is listed for commercial and residential plumbing use, and it carries NSF/ANSI Standard 14 with NSF U.P. certification, plus UL Listed 94V-0. It meets ASTM D2665, D3965, D2661 and D3311, and CSA B181.1, which is the set an inspector or a spec writer on an institutional job will be looking for on ABS DWV.
5) Will an ABS closet flange hold up to hot water and drain cleaner in a rental property?
The ABS body is rated for service from -40F to 180F and resists everything from sewage to household chemical cleaners, which covers a toilet discharge line in apartment or hotel service. One hard limit: never test or use the line with compressed air or other gases. Water test only.
6) What else do I need to order with a Nibco 5851 closet flange to set the toilet?
The flange itself is just the ABS fitting. You still need ABS solvent cement to make the joint, closet bolts, a wax ring or gasket, and floor fasteners suited to wood or concrete. None of that is part of the fitting.
7) What color is the Nibco 5851 ABS closet flange, and does it come with a metal ring?
Black, which is standard for ABS DWV. It is an all-plastic flange body, ABS throughout, rather than a plastic hub with a stamped metal ring on top.
