The ABS DWV closet flange features a female NPT thread connection. The closet flange is secured to the floor of the dwelling so that a toilet can be affixed to it and allow for a pipe connection (under the floor) to continue the piping for evacuation of the used water. Please refer to NIBCO technical data sheets and catalogs for engineering and installation information. Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene (ABS) is resistant to a wide variety of materials ranging from sewage to commercial household chemical formulations and can be exposed to a wide temperature span. ABS is lightweight, safe to handle and easy to install. ABS DWV is joined by solvent cementing or threading and can easily be connected to steel, copper, or cast iron through the use of transition fittings. NIBCO® plastic fittings are backed by a 5-year limited warranty. Because of its longstanding reputation for innovation and precision in design and manufacturing, NIBCO is the preferred brand in the industry.

Nibco I355320 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will the Nibco 5851-3 ABS closet flange thread onto my existing 3 inch drain pipe?
The 5851-3 is a 4 x 3 inch closet flange with a female NPT threaded inlet, so it screws onto male pipe thread, not a plain plastic spigot. If what is coming up through the floor is a plain-end 3 inch ABS DWV pipe with no thread on it, this is the wrong fitting for that opening; you would want a hub or spigot closet flange that solvent cements instead. Where the riser is a threaded 3 inch nipple, this drops right on.
2) Can I glue the Nibco 5851-3 closet flange, or does it have to be threaded?
This one is threaded only. The connection on the 5851-3 is female NPT, so it makes up with pipe thread and sealant or tape, not solvent cement. ABS DWV as a system can be joined either by solvent cementing or by threading, but the joint you get on this particular flange is the threaded one. If the plan is a cemented joint, order the hub version of the closet flange rather than the FIPT.
3) Is this Nibco ABS closet flange OK for a commercial building, or is it residential only?
Both. The 5851-3 is listed for commercial and residential plumbing use, and it carries the certifications a plans reviewer or facility spec usually asks for on DWV plastic: NSF/ANSI Standard 14, NSF U.P. Certified, UL Listed 94V-0, plus ASTM D2665, D3965, D2661, D3311 and CSA B181.1. That set is what lets it go into a multi-family or institutional job the same as a house.
4) Will an ABS closet flange connect to my cast iron or copper drain?
Not directly. ABS DWV connects to steel, copper or cast iron through a transition fitting, so on a retrofit over an old cast iron closet bend you need the appropriate transition or adapter between the two materials before the flange goes on. Within an all-ABS system there is nothing extra to buy.
5) What pipe schedule does the Nibco 5851-3 closet flange match?
Schedule 40. That matters because the threaded socket is cut to schedule 40 dimensions, so it mates with standard schedule 40 DWV pipe and fittings rather than a thinner-wall drain product. If the rest of the stack under the floor is schedule 40 ABS, the sizes line up.
6) Can I use ABS closet flanges on a chemical or lab waste line?
Within limits. ABS resists a wide range of materials from sewage through common commercial and household chemical formulations, which covers ordinary sanitary drainage. It is a DWV drain, waste and vent fitting, so it is for gravity drainage only. Two hard limits: the service temperature range is -40F to 180F, and it must never be tested or used with compressed air or other gases. A dedicated lab waste system is a different material call.
7) What is the Nibco part number for the 4 x 3 ABS threaded closet flange?
Nibco 5851-3, manufacturer part number I355320, in the 4 x 3 inch size with the FIPT connection. That is the identifier to quote when standardizing a fixture package so nobody substitutes the hub version by mistake.
8) What does a closet flange actually do, and do I need one to set a toilet?
Yes, it is what the toilet mounts to. The flange fastens to the floor of the dwelling, the toilet bolts down to it, and it carries the connection into the pipe below the floor that takes the waste away. Without it there is nothing to anchor the fixture to and no sealed path into the drain.
9) Is the Nibco 5851-3 closet flange black ABS or white PVC?
Black. It is molded in ABS, acrylonitrile butadiene styrene, which is the black DWV plastic. If the rest of the drainage in the building is white PVC, keep the systems separate or use a proper transition, and match your solvent or thread sealant to the material you are actually joining.
