Nibco H173600 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What is a Nibco 917-B test cap used for on a DWV rough-in?
The 917-B is a copper test cap that slips over the end of a pipe and is soldered on to seal it. On a DWV rough-in that lets you cap open stubs and pressurize or fill the system for inspection. It is a DWV drain/waste/vent fitting, used on both commercial and residential plumbing.
2) What pipe sizes do Nibco 917-B copper test caps come in?
Seven sizes: 1/2, 3/4, 1, 1-1/4, 1-1/2, 2 and 3 inch. The 1-1/2, 2 and 3 inch are the ones most DWV work consumes, since those are the usual branch, stack and vent sizes. Order by size, for example H173700 for 1-1/2 inch and H173750 for 2 inch.
3) Does the 917-B test cap go over the pipe or inside the fitting?
Over the pipe. It is a C end, meaning a solder cup that receives the outside of the tube, so the nominal size you order is the pipe size it slides onto. There is no male end on it, so it caps a stub or a tube end, not a female fitting socket.
4) Can I use a Nibco 917-B test cap on a pressurized water line, or is it drain only?
It is catalogued for DWV drain, waste and vent service. Copper DWV fittings are made for the low pressures of drainage and vent testing, not for continuous potable water pressure. If you need to cap a live water line, use a pressure-rated wrot copper cap rather than a DWV test cap.
5) What material is the Nibco 917-B test cap, and will it hold up in a copper DWV system?
Wrot copper, ASTM B75 alloy C12200, dezincification resistant, with material and workmanship per ASME B16.29. C12200 is the same DHP copper as the tube it solders to, so there is no dissimilar-metal issue in the joint and no dezincification concern the way there is with a brass cap.
6) How do I remove a soldered copper test cap after the plumbing inspection passes?
It comes off the same way it went on: heat the joint until the solder flows and pull the cap, or cut the tube back past the cap and continue with a coupling. Plan the stub long enough that cutting it off still leaves you the length you need. The cap is soldered on, not threaded or mechanical, so there is no way to back it off cold.
7) Do I need anything besides the test cap to seal off a copper stub for testing?
The cap ships bare, so you supply the solder, flux and heat. Clean and flux the tube end and the cup, sweat it like any other copper joint. Nibco publishes Copper Fittings Installation Instructions covering the procedure, and their technical data sheets cover engineering and installation detail.
8) Is copper the right choice for a LEED or sustainable-build spec on DWV fittings?
Copper is reusable and recyclable at end of life, which is why it carries well on sustainable projects, and these fittings are manufactured in an ISO 9001 certified facility. The 917-B is solid C12200 copper with no plating or coating to complicate recycling.
