1) Will a Nibco PC617 press cap go on copper pipe without soldering?
That is the point of it. The PC617 has a press end connection, so it goes on with a pressing tool and jaw rather than a torch. Nibco calls out a witness mark: when the joint is properly crimped an "N" shows on the fitting, so an inspector can see from across the room which joints were pressed. No flame means you can cap a line in an occupied building or a finished ceiling without a hot work permit.
2) Can I use a Nibco PC617 copper cap on a potable water line?
Yes, and it is lead-free. The PC617 is built from ASTM B75 alloy C12200 copper and is third party certified to UPC, plus to the performance requirements of CSA MSE 13 and PS-117. It carries the same certification set whether the line is residential or commercial potable water.
3) What pressure and temperature can a Nibco Press System copper cap handle?
Rated 200 psi cold working pressure over a temperature range of -20 F to 250 F. That covers domestic hot water, chilled water, and hydronic heating loops. Steam is outside it. If you are dead-ending a line that sees a pressure test above 200 psi, this is not the cap for that test.
4) Can a Nibco press cap be buried underground or used on a fire sprinkler line?
Both are called out. Nibco Press System fittings are approved for underground installation, and the PC617 cap's listed system uses include automatic sprinkler systems, commercial and residential plumbing, heating, HVAC and irrigation. So a capped stub on a buried irrigation main or a sprinkler branch is within its stated use.
5) Will a Nibco press cap work on type M, L or K copper tube?
The PC617 is made to join seamless copper water tube, which is the drawn tube sold as type M, L and K in nominal sizes. What matters is that the tube is copper water tube in the nominal size on the cap and that the end is cut square, deburred and clean to the correct insertion depth. Press fittings seal on the outside diameter of the tube, and copper water tube of a given nominal size shares one outside diameter across the types, so wall thickness does not change the fit.
6) Is a press cap the right way to dead-end a copper stub, or should I use a solder cap?
A press cap is the choice when you cannot or do not want to bring flame to the joint: occupied space, finished ceilings, a tenant unit you have to hand back the same day, or a wet line you cannot dry out for solder. It seals on the tube with a crimp and shows the "N" witness mark when done. A solder cap is still fine on new rough-in where a torch is already in hand and you have no pressing tool on the truck. The trade-off is tooling, not performance: the PC617 needs a press tool and the correct jaw for the size.
7) Do I need a special tool to install a Nibco PC617 press cap, and will my existing jaws work?
You need a press tool with the jaw or chain matched to the tube size. Nibco supplies pressing tools, jaws and chains as part of the Press System. Sizes up to 2 inch are typically pressed with a standard jaw; the larger 2-1/2, 3 and 4 inch caps use the large-diameter chain style. Confirm your tool covers the size range you are capping before you order 3 and 4 inch caps, since many small press guns stop at 2 inch.
8) Does the Nibco PC617 press cap meet the spec if my drawings call for ASME B16.51 press fittings?
Yes. The PC617 complies with ASME B16/51 performance, which is the standard covering copper and copper alloy press-connect pressure fittings. It is also third party certified to UPC and to the performance requirements of CSA MSE 13 and PS-117, which is usually what a submittal reviewer is looking for on a press joint.
9) I need to cap several sizes on one riser. What Nibco part numbers do I order?

There are no finish or configuration options to pick, so tube size is the only thing you specify.
10) Is the Nibco PC617 cap brass or copper, and will it hold up in aggressive water?
Solid wrot copper, ASTM B75 alloy C12200, and listed as dezincification resistant. Dezincification is a brass problem, so a copper cap sidesteps it entirely. For a facility standardizing on copper throughout, this keeps the dead-end the same metal as the run, with no dissimilar-metal joint at the cap.
11) Can I mix Nibco press caps with press fittings from another manufacturer on the same job?
Keep the system to one manufacturer. Press fittings seal with a sealing element and a crimp profile that the tool's jaw is matched to, and the Nibco Press System is sold as a matched set of fittings, valves, tools, jaws and chains. Cap a Nibco press run with a PC617 and press it with the jaw the system calls for, and the "N" witness mark tells you the joint took.
