Nibco NBC-617 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What size copper tube does the Nibco 617 cap fit, and does it go over the pipe or inside it?
The 617 tube cap fits over the end of the tube. It has a solder cup sized to the outside diameter of copper tube, so you slide it on and sweat the joint. Sizes run 1/8, 1/4, 3/8, 1/2, 5/8, 3/4, 1, 1-1/4, 1-1/2, 2, 2-1/2, 3 and 4 inch nominal. Match the cap size to the nominal tube size you are capping, not to a thread size, since there is no thread on this fitting at all.
2) Is the Nibco 617 copper cap lead free and approved for potable water?
Lead free, and certified to NSF/ANSI/CAN 61 and 372, which are the potable water and lead content standards. Material and workmanship meet ASME B16.22, with material, workmanship and dimensions per MSS SP-104. The body is copper, ASTM B75 alloy C12200. That covers residential and commercial potable plumbing.
3) What is the difference between the wrot and the cleaned and bagged Nibco 617 cap?
Same fitting, different processing. The cleaned and bagged version is degreased and sealed for oxygen-clean service, which is what medical gas work requires, and the MPN carries a CB suffix (for example 9172650CB in 1/2 inch versus 9172650 plain). Cleaned and bagged is offered in 1/2, 3/4, 1, 1-1/4, 1-1/2 and 2 inch. If you are capping a med gas or compressed air line being brazed to spec, order CB; for ordinary water or hydronic work the standard wrot cap is the one.
4) Can I use a Nibco 617 cap on a medical gas line?
Yes, the 617 is listed for med gas service and the description ties it to NFPA 99 Health Care Facilities gas and vacuum systems and Compressed Gas Association Pamphlet G4.1. For that work take the cleaned and bagged version so the cap arrives oxygen clean; it comes in 1/2 through 2 inch. Hospital and institutional med gas installs are inspected against the cleanliness of the fittings as well as the joint, so the bagging matters.
5) What does the C end connection on a Nibco copper cap mean?
C means a solder cup that accepts copper tube, the standard sweat socket. You clean the tube end and the inside of the cup, flux, seat the tube, and solder. There is no FTG or male end on the 617, so it only terminates a run, it cannot be soldered into another fitting's socket.
6) Is the Nibco 617 copper cap rated for fire sprinkler systems?
Fire protection is one of its listed system uses, and select diameters are UL 207 Recognized to 700 PSI. Copper sprinkler mains and branch lines get capped at the end of a run or at a future-extension point, and this is the fitting for it. Confirm with your AHJ which diameters your design needs the UL Recognition on.
7) Should I use a solder cap or a threaded cap to close off a copper line?
Use a solder cap like the 617 when you are terminating copper tube and want a permanent, one-piece seal with nothing to back off or weep. A threaded cap makes sense only where there is already male pipe thread to screw onto, or where you expect to open the line again later. Capping copper with a threaded cap means adding an adapter and a second joint, which is two more places to leak. If you want the line reopenable, put a ball valve or a cap on a female adapter instead.
8) How do I order the right Nibco 617 cap part number for a 3/4 inch copper stub?
For 3/4 inch you want MPN 9172700 in standard wrot, or 9172700CB if you need it cleaned and bagged. Two things to specify on any size: the nominal tube size and whether the job calls for cleaned and bagged. Everything else about the fitting is fixed, there is no handing, finish, or thread option to pick.
9) Does the Nibco 617 come in sizes above 2 inch for a main?
Yes, up to 4 inch. Above 2 inch the range goes 2-1/2 inch (MPN 9172950), 3 inch (9173000) and 4 inch (9173100), all in standard wrot. The cleaned and bagged option tops out at 2 inch, so a large-diameter med gas main needs a different approach than simply ordering CB in that size.
10) Will a Nibco 617 cap work on hydronic heating and chilled water lines?
Yes. Listed system uses cover heating, HVAC, industrial, compressed air and irrigation alongside potable plumbing, so the same cap closes a hydronic riser stub, a chilled water branch, or an air drop. The copper body handles the same service the tube does, so the cap is not the limiting part of the run.
11) Will dezincification be a problem with these copper caps on aggressive water?
No. The 617 is dezincification resistant and made from ASTM B75 alloy C12200, which is a copper alloy rather than a brass, so there is no zinc to leach out. That is the failure mode property managers see on older yellow brass fittings in soft or chloraminated water; a wrot copper cap does not share it.
12) Is there a Nibco 617 cap small enough for 1/8 inch copper tubing on a gauge or instrument line?
Yes, the range starts at 1/8 inch (MPN 9172500) and includes 1/4 inch (9172550), 3/8 inch (9172600) and 5/8 inch (9172670). Those small sizes are what you need for instrument taps, gauge lines, and the odd 5/8 inch refrigeration-size run that standard plumbing caps skip.
13) Do I need anything besides the cap to make up the joint?
The 617 cap ships as the fitting only. You supply the solder, flux, and heat; no gasket, ring, or nut is part of it. Nibco publishes Copper Fittings Installation Instructions covering joint prep and sweating procedure, and it is worth following on the larger diameters where getting the whole cup up to temperature takes longer than people expect.
