The coupling features solder cups and a rolled stop. The fitting provides a means of connecting two lengths of tube together. Please refer to NIBCO technical data sheets and catalogs for engineering and installation information. In addition to its inherent qualities of beauty, durability and low maintenance, copper's reusability makes it an ideal application in sustainable projects. NIBCO® copper fittings are manufactured in an ISO 9001 certified facility, and backed by a 50-year limited warranty. Nibco NBC-600-RS – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What does the rolled stop in the Nibco 600-RS coupling do, and when do I want a coupling without one?
The rolled tube stop is a formed ridge inside the coupling that stops each tube at the center, so both ends bottom out at the same insertion depth and you get equal solder cup engagement on both sides. That's what you want on new runs where you can slide tube in from both directions. On a repair, where you have to slide the coupling fully onto one existing tube and then back it over the joint, the stop is in the way and you want a stopless (slip) coupling instead. The 600-RS is offered in both straight size and with-stop configurations.
2) Is the Nibco 600-RS a solder fitting or a press fitting?
Solder. Both ends are copper solder cups, C x C, meaning they take copper tube on each side and get sweated with solder or brazed. There's no press ring, no gasket, and no threads anywhere on the fitting, so plan on torch work and a proper flux and solder for the system you're joining.
3) What is the difference between the wrot and the cleaned and bagged version of the Nibco 600-RS?
Same copper coupling, different processing. The cleaned and bagged version is degreased and sealed at the factory, which is what medical gas and oxygen service require so no oil or particulate enters the line. If you're running med gas under NFPA 99 or CGA G4.1, order the CB version and keep the bag sealed until you're ready to braze. For ordinary plumbing, hydronic or HVAC work the standard wrot coupling is what you want. CB is offered in 1/4, 1/2, 3/4, 1, 1-1/4, 1-1/2, 2, 2-1/2, 3 and 4 inch.
4) Can I use the Nibco 600-RS coupling on a potable water line, and is it lead free?
Yes on both counts. The 600-RS is lead free and certified to NSF/ANSI/CAN 61 and 372, which are the drinking water contact and lead content standards inspectors ask for on potable systems. It's also dezincification resistant, so it holds up in aggressive water chemistry.
5) Will a Nibco 600-RS coupling work on a fire protection or compressed air system?
It's rated for both. Listed system uses cover commercial and residential plumbing, compressed air, fire protection, heating, HVAC, industrial, irrigation and medical gas. Select diameters are UL 207 Recognized to 700 PSI. For a fire sprinkler job, confirm the size you're buying carries that UL Recognition before you spec it, since it does not apply across every diameter.
6) What standard does the Nibco 600-RS copper coupling meet for an engineer's submittal?
Material and workmanship are per ASME B16.22, and material, workmanship and dimensions are per MSS SP-104. The copper itself is ASTM B75 alloy C12200. Those three are what a spec on a commercial drawing normally calls out for wrot copper solder fittings, and they are what you put on the submittal. NIBCO copper fittings are made in an ISO 9001 certified facility.
7) Do I need a coupling or a repair coupling to join two existing pipe ends that can't move?
If neither tube end can be pulled apart, the 600-RS with its rolled stop won't go on, because the stop blocks you from sliding the coupling fully onto one side to bridge the joint. Use a stopless repair coupling for that. Where you're joining two new lengths, or one end has enough spring to flex, the rolled stop is the better choice since it self centers the joint and guarantees full cup engagement on both tubes.
8) Can I use the same Nibco 600-RS coupling for a med gas line and for domestic water in the same building?
The fitting is approved for both services, but you should not buy one part number for both. Med gas piping under NFPA 99 and CGA G4.1 requires the factory cleaned and bagged version, kept sealed until installation, and it's brazed rather than soldered. Domestic water runs on the standard wrot coupling with lead free solder. Ordering separately by service keeps the med gas material clean and keeps your inspector happy on the oxygen side.
9) Is the Nibco 600-RS coupling brass or copper?
Solid copper, ASTM B75 alloy C12200 wrot copper, not a cast brass body. That matters for two reasons on a job: wrot copper fittings have thinner, more uniform walls that heat faster with a torch than cast fittings, and copper on copper avoids the dissimilar metal question entirely at the joint.
