Nibco NBC-601 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What is a Nibco 601 repair coupling without a stop used for?
The Nibco 601 is a solder coupling with no internal stop, made to join or repair two lengths of copper tube. Because there is no ridge in the middle, the coupling slides fully onto one tube, so you can cut out a damaged section, slip the coupling back over the joint, and center it where you need it. A coupling with a stop cannot do that, which is why the no-stop version is what plumbers keep on the truck for repairs on installed pipe. Both cups are C x C, so both ends solder to copper tube.
2) What size copper pipe does the Nibco 601 coupling come in?
The 601 coupling runs from 1/4 inch through 8 inch: 1/4, 3/8, 1/2, 5/8, 3/4, 1, 1-1/4, 1-1/2, 2, 2-1/2, 3, 3-1/2, 4, 5 and 8 inch. All are straight size, meaning both cups take the same tube size, so a 3/4 inch coupling (MPN 9020400) joins 3/4 inch to 3/4 inch. If you need to change sizes at the joint you want a reducing coupling, not this one.
3) Can I use the Nibco 601 coupling on potable water lines?
Yes. The 601 is certified to NSF/ANSI/CAN 61 and 372, the drinking water standards that cover material safety and lead content, and it is a lead-free fitting. Nibco lists it for residential and commercial plumbing use.
4) What is the difference between the wrot and the cleaned and bagged Nibco 601 coupling?
Same copper repair coupling either way. The cleaned and bagged version has been degreased and sealed at the factory for oxygen-clean service, which is what medical gas work requires, and it is stocked in 1/2, 3/4, 1, 1-1/4, 1-1/2 and 2 inch (for example 9020300CB in 1/2 inch). Plain wrot covers everything else, including the sizes above 2 inch. If you are brazing a med-gas line, buy the CB part and keep the bag sealed until you are ready to make the joint.
5) Is the Nibco 601 coupling approved for medical gas piping?
Yes, the 601 is made to NFPA 99 Health Care Facilities gas and vacuum requirements and to Compressed Gas Association Pamphlet G4.1. For a med-gas install, take the cleaned and bagged variant, which is available from 1/2 inch through 2 inch.
6) Will the Nibco 601 coupling meet a spec calling out ASME B16.22 or MSS SP-104?
Yes. Material and workmanship are per ASME B16.22, and material, workmanship and dimensions are per MSS SP-104. The 5 inch and 8 inch sizes are built to MSS SP-109. Those are the dimensional standards a mechanical spec normally cites for wrot copper solder fittings, so the 601 drops into a B16.22 callout without a substitution request.
7) How do I cut in a Nibco 601 no-stop coupling on a pipe that is already installed?
That is what the no-stop design is for. Slide the coupling all the way onto one cut end so it clears the gap, bring the second length of tube into line, then slide the coupling back so it straddles the joint with roughly equal engagement in each cup. Clean and flux both tube ends and both cup bores before you slide it, because once the coupling is in position you cannot get inside it. With a stop-type coupling you would have to spring the pipe apart to seat it, which is usually impossible on a strapped run.
8) Is the Nibco 601 coupling C x C sizing nominal pipe size or actual OD?
C x C means both ends are solder cups sized to nominal copper tube. A 1/2 inch 601 coupling takes 1/2 inch nominal copper tube, which measures 5/8 inch actual outside diameter, and a 3/4 inch takes tube of 7/8 inch OD. Order by the nominal size printed on your pipe, not by what a tape measure reads across the tube.
9) What copper alloy is the Nibco 601 coupling made from, and will it hold up in aggressive water?
It is wrot copper, ASTM B75 alloy C12200, and it is dezincification resistant. C12200 is essentially pure copper with no zinc in it, so the dezincification failure that shows up in brass fittings on aggressive or high-chloride water is not a mechanism here. That is why it is specified for hydronic heating, chilled water, compressed air and irrigation as well as domestic water.
10) Should I use a repair coupling or a standard coupling with a stop?
Pick by whether the pipe can move. New work, where you can bring the tube to the fitting, calls for a coupling with a stop: the internal ridge sets engagement depth for you and both cups end up equal without thinking about it. Repair or tie-in work on strapped, in-place pipe calls for the 601 no-stop, because it is the only one you can slide clear of the gap and back over the joint. The tradeoff is that you own the centering yourself, so mark your engagement depth on the tube before you solder.
11) Can I braze the Nibco 601 coupling instead of soldering it?
The 601 is a wrot copper solder-cup fitting, and wrot copper takes brazing filler as readily as it takes solder, which is how it qualifies for medical gas work under NFPA 99 (med-gas copper joints are brazed, not soldered). For domestic water, 50/50 style lead-free solder is the normal joint. Either way the cup depth is what carries the joint, so the tube has to bottom or near-bottom in the cup and be fully cleaned and fluxed.
12) Can the Nibco 601 copper coupling be used on a fire sprinkler line?
Nibco lists the 601 for fire protection service alongside commercial plumbing, HVAC and industrial use. Copper is an accepted sprinkler piping material, but the pressure rating for a soldered joint drops sharply with temperature, so the joint has to be qualified against the pressure and the filler metal your sprinkler design calls for. Confirm the filler with the engineer of record on that system.
13) Does the 601 coupling work on hydronic heating and chilled water piping, not just domestic water?
Yes, heating and HVAC are both listed applications for the 601, along with compressed air, industrial and irrigation lines. It is the same copper repair coupling in all of them, so a facility running copper for both domestic water and hydronic can standardize on one fitting and one solder procedure across the building rather than stocking two.
