1) What is the difference between a Nibco 600-DS coupling with a dimpled tube stop and a coupling without a stop?
The 600-DS has dimples formed inside the socket that stop the tube at the correct insertion depth, so each end bottoms out on its own and the joint sits centered. A stopless coupling (C x C, no stop) lets tube slide all the way through, which is what you want for repairs where you have to slip the fitting over an existing line or take up expansion. For new runs where you are joining two cut lengths, the dimpled stop is faster and gives consistent socket engagement.
2) Can I use this Nibco coupling on a medical gas line?
Yes. The 600-DS meets NFPA 99 Health Care Facilities Gas and Vacuum Systems and Compressed Gas Association Pamphlet G4.1 for medical gas, and med-gas is one of its listed system uses. For med-gas work order the Cleaned and Bagged version rather than plain wrot, since the brazed joint has to stay free of oil and contaminants. Cleaned and Bagged is offered in 3/4 inch (9001250CB), 1 inch (9001450CB), 1-1/4 inch (9001700CB) and 1-1/2 inch (9002000CB).
3) Is the Nibco 600-DS coupling lead-free and approved for potable water?
It is lead-free and certified to NSF/ANSI/CAN 61 and 372, which is the drinking water requirement, and it is dezincification resistant. Residential and commercial plumbing are both listed system uses, so it is usable on potable hot and cold water distribution.
4) What standards do Nibco 600-DS wrot copper couplings meet for a spec submittal?
Material is ASTM B75 alloy C12200 copper. Material and workmanship follow ASME B16.22, and material, workmanship and dimensions follow MSS SP-104, with MSS SP-109 applying to the 5 inch through 8 inch sizes. Certified to NSF/ANSI/CAN 61 and 372, lead-free, and UL 207 Recognized to 700 PSI in select diameters. Made in an ISO 9001 certified facility.
5) I need to join two pieces of copper that are already fixed in place. Is a dimpled stop coupling the right choice?
No. Because the dimples block the tube at the socket depth, you cannot slide a 600-DS along the pipe to bridge a fixed gap. For a repair where both ends are captive you need a stopless (slip) coupling, which lets the tube pass through the body so you can position it. Use the 600-DS on new work and anywhere at least one end is free to move into the socket.
6) What is the difference between the Wrot and Cleaned and Bagged options on this coupling?
Same wrot copper fitting either way. Cleaned and Bagged means the fitting has been degreased and sealed at the factory for oxygen, medical gas and other clean-service work where the interior must be free of oil and particulates. If you are running standard water, heating or HVAC copper, the plain wrot version is what you want. Cleaned and Bagged is limited to 3/4, 1, 1-1/4 and 1-1/2 inch; every other size comes wrot only.
7) Can I use this copper coupling on a fire sprinkler line or compressed air?
Yes to both. Listed system uses include fire protection, compressed air, heating, HVAC, industrial and irrigation alongside plumbing. The fitting is UL 207 Recognized to 700 PSI in select diameters, so for fire protection confirm the diameter you are ordering carries that recognition against the Nibco technical data sheet for your size.
8) Does this coupling solder or does it need to be brazed?
It is a solder-pressure fitting with solder cups on both ends, C x C, so it is joined with solder and flux to copper tube in the normal way. Larger diameters and clean services such as medical gas are brazed instead, and the same wrot fitting takes either process since it is C12200 copper throughout. No threads, no gaskets, no mechanical parts.
9) Is a wrot copper coupling different from a cast copper fitting?
Wrot means the fitting is formed from drawn copper tube rather than cast. Wrot fittings have thinner, more uniform walls, tighter socket tolerances and a smoother interior, which is why they are the standard choice for pressure plumbing. The 600-DS is wrot C12200 copper in every size, dimensioned to ASME B16.22 and MSS SP-104.
