1) What sizes does the Nibco PC741 press companion flange come in?
The PC741 companion flange is made for 1 inch, 1-1/4 inch, 1-1/2 inch and 2 inch copper tube. The order numbers run B305358PC for 1 inch, B305408PC for 1-1/4, B305458PC for 1-1/2 and B305508PC for 2 inch.
2) How does the PC741 flange connect to the copper line, and does it need solder?
One end is a press socket for copper tube and the other is a bolted flange face, so the tube side goes on with a press tool and jaw, no torch or solder. When the crimp is made correctly a raised "N" witness mark shows on the fitting, which is how you verify the joint on inspection.
3) What is the pressure and temperature limit on the Nibco PC741 companion flange?
105 psi cold working pressure, dropping to 90 psi at 250 degrees F. Those limits follow MSS SP-106 for cast copper alloy flanges and flanged fittings in Class 125, 150 and 300. On a press copper system the flange is usually the limiting component, so size your system pressure around it rather than around the press fittings upstream.
4) Can I use the PC741 flange on potable drinking water?
No. The PC741 is a cast bronze body in ASTM B584 C84400 brass, and its use in U.S. drinking water applications is prohibited after January 3, 2014. Keep it on non-potable duty: hydronic heating, chilled water, HVAC, industrial process, irrigation and sprinkler piping. If the line is potable, you need a lead free companion flange instead.
5) What systems is the Nibco PC741 companion flange approved for?
It is listed for automatic sprinkler systems, commercial and residential plumbing, heating, HVAC, industrial and irrigation service. Note that the potable restriction still governs, so on plumbing work treat it as a non-drinking-water application.
6) What do I need besides the flange to make the bolted connection?
The PC741 is the flange only. You still need a mating flange or flanged valve/pump housing, a gasket, and a bolt set of the right length for the two flange thicknesses. On the tube side you need a press tool with the jaw matched to the tube size you ordered, 1 inch through 2 inch.
7) Is this flange suitable for a system with aggressive water that eats up brass fittings?
The cast bronze flange is dezincification resistant, made from C84400 brass with a wrot copper outlet in ASTM B75 Alloy C12200. It also carries third party certification to the performance requirements of CSA MSE 13 and PS-117.
8) Why use a press companion flange instead of a soldered or threaded flange on a pump connection?
A companion flange is what lets you break the line at a pump, a large valve or a piece of equipment without cutting pipe, and the press version gets that flange onto copper tube without a flame. That matters in occupied buildings, mechanical rooms with hot work restrictions, and retrofit work where you want the joint done in seconds. If the connection is on potable water, or the system runs above 105 psi cold, use a different flange.
9) Can Nibco press fittings like the PC741 be buried underground?
Yes, Nibco Press System fittings are approved for underground installation. Follow the Nibco Press System installation instructions for burial detail and for the press procedure before backfilling, since you cannot re-press a joint once it is covered.
