Nibco NL1Z00A – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can I use the Nibco T-154-A bronze gate valve on potable water?
No. The T-154-A is prohibited from use in U.S. drinking water applications after January 3, 2014. It is built for commercial plumbing, heating and HVAC service, steam in particular, and general utility lines. For a potable water branch shutoff you need a valve that meets the lead-free requirement instead of this one.
2) What pressure can the Nibco T-154-A gate valve handle on a steam line?
200 psi / 13.8 bar saturated steam, up to 391 F / 201 C. On cold water, oil or gas service the T-154-A is rated 400 psi non-shock cold working pressure. That steam number is what makes it a Class 200 valve, and it is the figure to check against your boiler or riser design pressure before it goes in.
3) How does the Nibco T-154-A connect to pipe, and does it need soldering?
No soldering. The T-154-A has female NPT threaded ends (FIPT) on both sides, so it threads onto male-threaded steel, brass or copper adapters. That also means you can pull it later with a union or by breaking the joint, which is why threaded bronze is the usual pick on steam and utility work where a solder joint near heat is a problem.
4) Do I need clearance above a rising stem gate valve like the T-154-A?
Yes, and it catches people out in tight ceiling spaces and pipe chases. The T-154-A is a rising stem design, so the stem and handwheel travel up as the valve opens. Leave headroom above the valve for the full stem travel. The upside is you can see valve position at a glance, which is why rising stem is specified on steam and mechanical rooms.
5) Does the Nibco T-154-A meet MSS SP-80 for a spec job?
Yes, the T-154-A conforms to MSS SP-80, the standard covering bronze gate, globe, angle and check valves. If the drawing calls for a Class 200 threaded bronze gate valve to MSS SP-80 with rising stem and union bonnet, this valve answers that line item.
6) What pipe sizes does the Nibco T-154-A bronze gate valve come in?
Eight sizes, 1/4, 3/8, 1/2, 3/4, 1, 1-1/4, 1-1/2 and 2 inch, all female NPT. The small end (1/4 and 3/8) covers gauge and drip legs; 1/2 through 1 inch handles most branch and equipment shutoffs; 2 inch is the top of the range, so anything larger than 2 inch NPT needs a different valve body.
7) Should I use a gate valve or a ball valve for a steam shutoff?
A gate valve like the T-154-A is an isolation valve, full open or full shut, and it is not meant to throttle. Partially open, the wedge chatters and wire-draws the seat. Its advantage on steam is the straight-through unrestricted bore and the 200 psi saturated steam rating. If you need throttling or frequent quarter-turn cycling, a gate valve is the wrong tool.
8) Can the Nibco T-154-A be repacked or rebuilt in place instead of replaced?
The T-154-A uses a union bonnet, so the bonnet unthreads from the body as a unit for access to the stem, packing and wedge without cutting the valve out of the line. That is the difference between this and a screw-in bonnet valve, and it is why union bonnet gets specified where a valve is expected to be serviced rather than thrown away.
9) Will a bronze gate valve hold up in a hydronic system with dezincification problems?
The T-154-A is bronze throughout, body, solid wedge and integral seat, and is dezincification resistant. Dezincification is a brass failure mode where zinc leaches out and leaves a porous, weak casting; bronze construction is the standard answer to it in closed hydronic and steam loops. The seat is integral to the body, so there is no separate seat ring to erode loose.
10) What is the difference between a Class 125 and this Class 200 bronze gate valve?
Class rating on a bronze gate valve is the saturated steam pressure. The T-154-A is Class 200: 200 psi steam to 391 F and 400 psi non-shock cold working pressure. A Class 125 bronze gate is the lighter, lower-pressure valve of the same shape. If the engineer wrote Class 200, a Class 125 body will not satisfy it even though it threads into the same fittings.
11) Which Nibco part number do I order for a 3/4 inch threaded bronze gate valve?
The 3/4 inch T-154-A carries MPN NL1Z008. The other common sizes run NL1Z006 for 1/2 inch, NL1Z00A for 1 inch, NL1Z00C for 1-1/2 inch and NL1Z00D for 2 inch. All are the same Class 200 bronze body with female NPT ends, differing only in port size.
12) Can I mount a bronze gate valve horizontally, or does it have to be upright?
Orientation matters with a rising stem gate valve. The T-154-A carries a solid wedge, which tolerates installation in positions other than stem-up better than a split or flexible wedge, but stem vertical is still the position that keeps debris out of the seat and lets the packing gland be serviced. On steam, a stem-down install traps condensate in the bonnet.
