Nibco NL2HS0A – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What pipe sizes does the Nibco T-174-SS bronze gate valve come in, and how does it connect to the pipe?
Six sizes, all threaded: 1/2, 3/4, 1, 1-1/4, 1-1/2 and 2 inch. The ends are female NPT (FIPT), so they thread directly onto male-threaded pipe nipples or fittings, no soldering. That makes it a straight screw-in swap on existing threaded steel or brass lines. Class 300 threaded ends throughout.
2) Can I use a Nibco T-174-SS gate valve on a steam line, and at what pressure?
Yes, this is a steam-rated valve: 300 psi (20.7 bar) saturated steam up to 421 F / 216 C, and 600 psi (41.4 bar) non-shock cold working pressure. That covers medium to high pressure steam service as well as general utility and HVAC hot water lines. If your line runs above 300 psi steam, this is not the valve.
3) Is the Nibco T-174-SS gate valve approved for potable water?
No. Use of this bronze gate valve in U.S. drinking water applications is prohibited after January 3, 2014. It is for commercial plumbing, heating and HVAC service, steam, and general utility lines. For a domestic water branch you need a lead-free rated valve instead.
4) Does a rising stem gate valve need clearance above it when installed?
Yes, and it matters in a tight ceiling or pipe chase. The T-174-SS is a rising stem design, so the stem travels up out of the bonnet as the valve opens and needs headroom above the handwheel. The payoff is that you can see at a glance whether the valve is open or shut. Where there is no room to rise, a non-rising stem gate valve is the better pick.
5) Can the Nibco T-174-SS gate valve be repacked or rebuilt in place?
The union bonnet construction is what makes this serviceable. The bonnet unscrews from the body as a unit, so the wedge and stem assembly can be pulled and the packing renewed without cutting the valve out of the threaded line. That is the main reason a union bonnet valve gets specified over a screwed bonnet on a line you expect to maintain.
6) Why choose a stainless steel wedge gate valve over a standard bronze wedge?
The stainless wedge and seating surfaces on the T-174-SS hold up better on steam and hot condensate service, where a softer wedge wire-draws and starts to weep. The trim package is a stainless steel wedge in a bronze body, and the body itself is dezincification resistant, which matters on hot or aggressive water where ordinary brass loses zinc and goes porous.
7) Should I use a gate valve or a ball valve for a shutoff on a steam line?
A gate valve like the T-174-SS is a full-port isolation valve meant to sit fully open or fully closed, and the multi-turn handwheel closes it gradually, which avoids the water hammer a quarter-turn ball valve can cause on a long run. It is not a throttling valve; partial opening erodes the wedge. For throttling or balancing, use a globe valve instead.
8) Does the Nibco T-174-SS meet the MSS SP-80 spec called out on my drawing?
Yes. The valve conforms to MSS SP-80, the standard covering bronze gate, globe, angle and check valves, and it is a Class 300 valve with 600 psi CWP and 300 psi SWP ratings. That is the combination usually written into a mechanical spec for bronze isolation valves on steam and utility service.
9) What do I need to order alongside a threaded bronze gate valve to install it?
Nothing comes with the valve beyond the valve itself. Because the ends are female NPT, you need male-threaded nipples or adapters at each side, plus thread sealant or PTFE tape rated for your service temperature. On a steam line, put unions in on at least one side so the valve can be pulled later, and specify the pipe size to match: 1/2 through 2 inch are the sizes offered.
10) What is the Nibco part number for a 1 inch T-174-SS gate valve?
The 1 inch T-174-SS is MPN NL2HS0A. The rest of the range runs NL2HS06 for 1/2 inch, NL2HS08 for 3/4 inch, NL2HS0B for 1-1/4 inch, NL2HS0C for 1-1/2 inch and NL2HS0D for 2 inch. Each is the same Class 300 bronze body with stainless wedge, differing only by size.
