Sta-Kon F4-12 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Is the Sta-Kon F4-12 insulated, and does it need heat shrink or tape over it?
It is a non-insulated terminal, bare copper with no sleeve over the barrel. On any live circuit you will be adding your own insulation after crimping, typically heat shrink tubing or tape sized for 4 AWG. If you want the insulation built in, choose an insulated ring terminal instead.
2) Can I use a 4 AWG ring terminal like the F4-12 on a 480 V panel?
Yes. The F4-12 carries a 600 V rating, which covers 120/208, 277/480 and other common commercial distribution voltages. It is UL listed under file E9809.
3) Will the Sta-Kon F4-12 terminal work on aluminum conductor?
No. The barrel is copper, so it is intended for copper conductor only. Aluminum feeders need a terminal rated AL9CU or aluminum-only, with the correct inhibitor compound. Putting a copper-only lug on aluminum risks a galvanic connection that loosens and heats up over time.
4) Does the F4-12 ring terminal crimp with a hand tool or does it need a hydraulic crimper?
At 4 AWG this is a heavy barrel, past the range of a typical hand plier crimper. Expect to use a ratcheting or hydraulic crimper with the correct 4 AWG die for non-insulated terminals. The terminal ships bare, so no tooling or hardware is included, and the 1/2 inch stud bolt and washers come from your side.
5) Is a ring terminal or a fork terminal the right choice for a 4 AWG motor or panel connection?
A ring terminal like the F4-12 fully encircles the 1/2 inch stud, so it cannot vibrate off the landing even if the nut backs off slightly. That is what you want on motor leads, equipment grounds, and busbar studs. A fork or spade slides off sideways and is only appropriate where you need to remove the lead without pulling the nut, on low-vibration control terminations.
6) Do you carry a Sta-Kon 4 AWG ring terminal made in the USA for a government or institutional spec job?
The Sta-Kon F4-12 is manufactured in the United States, which matters on federal and many institutional procurements with domestic-content language. It is also UL listed under file E9809 and rated 600 V, the two line items a facilities spec usually asks for alongside origin.
7) Is the Sta-Kon F4-12 a single part number or are there options to choose?
There is one configuration, model F4-12, in bare metallic copper. Wire size, stud size and finish are all fixed, so the only thing to decide is quantity.
