Sta-Kon D71 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Is the Sta-Kon D71 insulated, and do I need to sleeve it after crimping?
It is a non-insulated ring terminal, bare copper barrel with no nylon or vinyl sleeve. On a 600 V circuit that means the crimp barrel is exposed, so if the lug sits where it can be touched or can short to an adjacent stud or enclosure wall, plan on heat shrink or an insulating boot over the barrel. In an enclosed lug compartment or a terminal block with barriers, bare is normal practice.
2) Will the Sta-Kon D71 work on aluminum wire?
No. It is a copper terminal and should be used on copper conductors only. Aluminum conductors need a terminal specifically listed AL/CU or AL9CU along with the correct inhibitor compound. Putting bare copper directly on aluminum invites galvanic corrosion at the joint.
3) Can I use the Sta-Kon D71 on a 480 V motor connection?
Yes. The D71 carries a 600 V rating, which covers 120, 208, 240, 277 and 480 V circuits. It is UL listed under file E9809.
4) Should I use a ring terminal or a fork terminal on an 8 AWG connection?
A ring tongue like the D71 has to come off the stud to be removed, so it cannot vibrate loose and slide out from under the nut. That is why rings are the usual choice on motor leads, battery and ground studs, and anything subject to vibration. A fork or spade tongue slides out sideways without fully backing off the nut, which saves time on panels you service often but is the wrong pick where movement or safety matters. On 8 AWG at 600 V, go ring.
5) Does the Sta-Kon D71 need a special crimp tool?
It is a crimp terminal, not a set-screw or solder lug, so it needs a crimping tool matched to an 8 AWG non-insulated barrel. A pliers-style insulated-terminal crimper will not form the barrel correctly at this size, and the UL listing under file E9809 applies to a properly made crimp. Use a ratchet or hydraulic crimper with the correct die for 8 AWG non-insulated lugs.
6) Is the Sta-Kon D71 made in the USA for a Buy American job?
Country of origin on the D71 is the United States. If your project runs under Buy American or Build America provisions, that is the data point your submittal package needs, alongside the UL file number E9809.
