1) What does the 90 degree bend on this Sta-Kon ring terminal do for me?
The tongue on the D71U is bent 90 degrees to the barrel, so the wire runs perpendicular to the stud instead of straight at it. That is what you want when the lug lands on a flat bus bar, breaker pad, or motor terminal block and the conductor has to turn away along the panel. If your wire approaches the stud in line with it, use a straight (flag-free) ring terminal instead.
