Sta-Kon GG2 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What wire size does the Sta-Kon GG2 butt splice accept?
The GG2 butt splice is sized for 2 to 1 AWG conductors, so it joins two heavy feeder or service-size wires end to end. Overall length is 1.72 inches, which is what you need to know when you are figuring how much straight run you have inside a panel, trough, or junction box before the splice bottoms out against a bend.
2) Is the Sta-Kon GG2 splice insulated, or do I have to tape or heat shrink it?
It is a non-insulated splice, bare copper barrel with no sleeve. The conductor connection itself is finished once it is crimped, but the splice body has to be insulated in the field with tape or heat shrink tubing to restore the insulation rating of the run. Order the tubing or tape separately; nothing is included with the connector.
3) Can a 2 AWG butt splice like this be used in a 480 V panel?
The GG2 carries a 600 V rating, which covers 120/208, 277/480, and 600 V circuits. It is also UL listed under file E9809. Keep in mind the splice is non-insulated, so the insulation you apply over it has to be rated for the circuit voltage as well.
4) Is the Sta-Kon GG2 copper, and can I use it on aluminum conductors?
The barrel is copper, so it is for copper conductors. Do not use it to splice aluminum wire, and do not use it for a copper-to-aluminum transition; that requires a connector specifically listed AL/CU for dissimilar metals.
5) Will this splice hold up in a hot location like a boiler room or a rooftop unit?
Rated to 150 degrees C, so the connector itself is good for high ambient and high conductor temperature work, including motor leads and equipment in boiler and mechanical rooms. The limit in practice is usually the conductor insulation and the tape or shrink sleeve you cover the barrel with, not the copper splice.
6) Should I use a non-insulated butt splice or an insulated one on a 2 AWG repair?
A non-insulated barrel like the GG2 is the choice when you want to control the insulation yourself, when heat shrink is specified, or when the splice sits in a high temperature spot where a factory nylon or vinyl sleeve would not survive. An insulated splice is faster on a straightforward in-box repair because there is no second step. On 2 to 1 AWG work in equipment and motor connections, bare barrel plus adhesive-lined heat shrink is the common approach.
7) Where is the Sta-Kon GG2 made?
Production is in the United States and Mexico, which is the detail institutional and government buyers usually need for domestic-content and sourcing documentation on a bid.
