Sta-Kon FF2 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What wire size does the Sta-Kon FF2 butt splice take?
The FF2 is sized for 4 to 3 AWG conductors, so it splices a pair of heavy feeder or branch conductors end to end. Both sides of the barrel take the same range, so it joins 4 to 4, 3 to 3, or 4 to 3. For anything smaller than 4 AWG the conductor will not fill the barrel and the crimp won't hold.
2) Is this butt splice insulated, and do I need to cover it after crimping?
It's a non-insulated copper barrel, so there's no jacket on it. After crimping you have to insulate the joint yourself, normally with heat shrink tubing or tape rated for the circuit. That's the trade-off: non-insulated barrels let you inspect the crimp and take tighter bends, but the finished splice isn't complete until it's covered.
3) What voltage and temperature is the FF2 splice rated for?
600 V, with a temperature rating of 150 degrees C. That covers standard 120/208, 277/480 building power and holds up in hot locations like motor terminal boxes, luminaire channels, and boiler rooms. Whatever insulation you put over the crimp has to carry the same ratings, or the assembly falls back to the weaker number.
4) Will a copper butt splice work on aluminum conductors?
No. The FF2 barrel is copper, so it's for copper conductors only. Splicing aluminum into a copper-only barrel sets up a dissimilar metal joint that corrodes and loosens. For aluminum or mixed runs you need a connector specifically marked AL9CU or AL/CU.
5) How long is the FF2 butt splice barrel?
Overall length is 1.12 inches, which means roughly half an inch of barrel per side for the conductor to seat into. Strip length should get the conductor to the center stop of the barrel, and you want two crimps per side on a barrel this size.
6) Should I use a non-insulated butt splice or an insulated one for a 4 AWG repair in a junction box?
Non-insulated, like the FF2, is the usual pick at 4 to 3 AWG because insulated barrels get scarce and bulky at that size, and you often want to see the conductor bottomed out in the barrel. The cost is an extra step: you add heat shrink afterward. Pick an insulated splice only on smaller gauges where the pre-insulated sleeve saves you the second operation.
7) Do I need a special crimp tool for a 4-3 AWG butt splice like this?
Yes. A barrel this heavy needs a hydraulic or heavy mechanical crimper with the die matched to the 4-3 AWG barrel. Hand-squeeze tools built for 22-10 AWG terminals won't compress it, and an under-crimped joint on a feeder conductor is a heat problem waiting to happen. The crimper and dies are separate items, not supplied with the splice.
8) Where is the Sta-Kon FF2 made, and what's the exact part number to order?
The part number is FF2, made in Mexico. If you're standardizing a stockroom or writing a submittal, FF2 is the designation to specify for the 4-3 AWG non-insulated copper butt splice.
