Sta-Kon BB2 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Does the BB2 splice come with insulation, or do I need to cover it myself?
It is a non-insulated splice, bare copper with no sleeve. Once crimped you have to insulate it yourself with heat shrink or tape unless it lives inside an enclosure where bare metal is acceptable. If you want the insulation built in, choose an insulated butt splice instead.
2) What voltage and temperature is the Sta-Kon BB2 rated for?
600 V, with a temperature rating of 150 degrees C. That covers standard building branch circuits, control wiring, and motor leads or luminaire whips where heat is a factor. It carries UL file E9809.
3) Can I use a non-insulated butt splice like the BB2 in a high-heat fixture or motor connection?
Yes, and that is where bare splices usually get specified. The 150 degree C rating is well above what a plastic-insulated splice tolerates, so the BB2 is the one to reach for in ballast compartments, luminaire whips, and motor lead boxes. You still have to add your own high-temperature sleeving over the crimp.
4) Is the Sta-Kon BB2 crimped or does it need solder?
It is a crimp splice. The copper barrel is formed to be compressed with a crimp tool sized for 18-14 AWG terminals; no solder is involved. Use the die that matches the wire gauge you are joining, not the barrel length.
5) Where is the Sta-Kon BB2 butt splice made?
Made in the United States. That matters on federal, state, and institutional jobs carrying domestic-sourcing requirements, where a bare copper splice still has to show country of origin on the submittal.
6) Is the BB2 color-coded like insulated splices are?
No. Insulated butt splices use red, blue, or yellow sleeves to signal wire range, but the BB2 is bare metallic copper with no color coding. Identify it by the BB2 part number and the 18-14 AWG range stamped in the catalog data rather than by color.
