Sta-Kon A73 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What wire size does the Sta-Kon A73 ring terminal accept?
The A73 is sized for 22 to 16 AWG stranded wire. If your conductor is 14 AWG or larger, this barrel won't crimp down on it correctly and you need the next size up in the Sta-Kon ring terminal range.
2) Will the Sta-Kon A73 fit a 3/8 inch stud or bolt?
Yes. The A73 ring tongue is drilled for a 3/8 inch bolt or stud, so it drops over 3/8 inch terminal block studs, breaker lugs and ground studs. The ring is closed, so the stud nut has to come off to install it.
3) Is this ring terminal insulated, and does that matter for my panel?
It is a non-insulated terminal, bare copper with no nylon or vinyl sleeve. In a panel where conductors sit close together or flex, you'd normally add heat shrink or a boot over the barrel after crimping, or specify an insulated ring terminal instead.
4) What voltage is the Sta-Kon A73 terminal rated for?
600 V. That covers standard commercial and industrial control panel, motor starter and lighting circuit work at 120/208/240/480 V. It is not a medium voltage connector.
5) Can I use a non-insulated ring terminal like the A73 on aluminum wire?
No. The A73 barrel is copper and intended for copper conductors. Aluminum conductors need a connector marked AL or AL9CU with the appropriate inhibitor compound.
6) Should I use a ring terminal or a fork terminal on a 3/8 inch stud?
A ring like the A73 fully encircles the 3/8 inch stud, so the connection cannot vibrate off if the nut backs away, which is why rings are specified for ground bonds, battery studs and anything subject to vibration. A fork or spade slides in without removing the nut and is quicker for service work, but it can pull out under load. For a permanent 3/8 inch stud connection, the ring is the right choice.
7) Where is the Sta-Kon A73 terminal made?
The A73 is made in the United States. That matters on federally funded and Buy American spec work, where country of origin has to be documented for installed electrical components.
