Sta-Kon D975 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Is this Sta-Kon lug rated for 600 volt control and power circuits?
Yes, the D975 carries a 600 V rating, which covers standard 480Y/277 and 600 V class control panel and motor circuit work, and it is UL recognized under file E9809.
2) Does a non-insulated ring terminal like the D975 need any extra insulation after crimping?
Plan on it. The D975 has a bare copper barrel with no insulating sleeve, so once it is crimped you cover the barrel yourself with heat shrink or tape wherever the installation requires the connection to be insulated. The upside of the non-insulated style is that you can inspect the crimp and see conductor fill before you cover it, which is why panel builders and MRO electricians often prefer it over an insulated vinyl or nylon terminal.
3) Should I use a ring terminal or a fork terminal for an 8 AWG connection to a 1/2 inch stud?
Use the ring style, which is what the D975 is. A ring has to be slid over the stud with the nut fully removed, but it cannot vibrate off the stud, which is why it is the normal choice on motor leads, bus studs, grounding studs, and anything subject to vibration. A fork or spade terminal installs faster under a loosened screw but can work free, so it belongs on low-vibration terminal blocks rather than a 1/2 inch power stud.
4) Can the D975 terminal be used on aluminum conductor?
No. The D975 barrel is copper, so it is a copper-only terminal and should be crimped on copper conductor. Aluminum feeders need a lug listed AL9CU or aluminum-rated, otherwise you get dissimilar metal corrosion at the joint.
5) Is the Sta-Kon D975 made in the USA for Buy American jobs?
Country of origin on the D975 is the United States, which is the data a government, transit, or federally funded institutional buyer needs when documenting domestic content for a procurement package.
