1) Is the G972NP terminal insulated, and do I need to add anything to finish the termination?
It's a non-insulated ring terminal, so the barrel and the crimp area are bare copper once installed. On any live circuit you'll want to cover it yourself, normally heat shrink over the barrel or tape, plus the stud hardware (bolt, nut, washers) which is not part of the terminal.
2) Should I use a ring terminal or a fork/spade terminal on a 5/16 inch stud?
A ring terminal like the G972NP goes fully around the stud, so it cannot back off the connection if the nut loosens. A fork or spade slides on from the side and lets you service the wire without fully removing the nut. For battery posts, grounding bars, panel landings and anything that vibrates, the ring is the one to use; the spade is a convenience choice on terminal blocks you service often.
3) Is the G972NP solid copper, and will it work on aluminum conductor?
The terminal is copper, which means it is intended for copper conductor only. Aluminum cable needs an AL9CU or aluminum-rated lug with the proper compound; putting aluminum into a copper-only barrel sets up a dissimilar-metal joint that corrodes and loosens.
4) How is the G972NP ring terminal attached to the wire, crimp or solder?
It's a crimp lug. The barrel is formed for a mechanical crimp with a heavy-duty die tool sized for 2 AWG, which is what Sta-Kon terminals are designed around. A 2 gauge barrel is beyond hand-plier range, so plan on a hydraulic or ratchet crimper with the matching die.
