Sta-Kon RAD1877F – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What wire gauge does the Sta-Kon RAD1877F flag disconnect crimp?
The RAD1877F takes 22 to 18 AWG stranded or solid copper, which is the red insulation color code on insulated terminals. If your conductor is 16 or 14 AWG it will not crimp properly in this barrel, and you need the blue (16-14) size instead.
2) Is the Sta-Kon RAD1877F fully insulated and rated for 600 volts?
Yes. The barrel and the flag body are fully insulated in nylon (polyamide), and the terminal carries a 600 V rating, so it suits line-voltage control wiring in panels and motor connections. Nylon insulation also holds up better to crushing and abrasion during pull-through than vinyl does.
3) Why use a 90 degree flag disconnect instead of a straight female disconnect?
A flag terminal brings the wire in at a right angle to the tab, so the conductor runs parallel to the face of the component rather than straight off the end of it. That is what you want when the terminal is in a shallow enclosure, behind a relay or contactor, or under a motor cover where a straight disconnect would bottom out against the housing or force a hard bend in the lead. If you have depth to work with, a straight female disconnect in the same 22-18 AWG range is easier to handle.
4) Does this Sta-Kon disconnect carry a UL listing I can cite on a submittal?
It is covered under UL file E66716. That is the reference an inspector or a spec reviewer will want for the terminal, and it is the same file family Sta-Kon insulated terminals are listed under.
5) What is the RAD1877F terminal made of, and will it hold up in a damp mechanical room?
The crimp barrel and receptacle are brass with nylon insulation over them. Brass gives you the conductivity and the spring retention on the tab; nylon resists moisture, oils and solvents better than PVC. For genuinely wet or corrosive locations you still want the splice inside a rated enclosure, since the insulation is not a sealed heat-shrink type.
6) Can I crimp the RAD1877F with ordinary pliers or do I need a terminal tool?
Use an insulated-terminal crimp tool matched to the red 22-18 AWG die. Pliers deform the brass barrel without forming it around the strands, and on a fully insulated nylon body you will split the insulation before you get a sound crimp. Strip only enough jacket for the barrel so no copper shows past the insulation.
7) Is the Sta-Kon RAD1877F made in the USA for a domestic-preference job?
Country of origin on the RAD1877F is the United States, which is what you need on record for Buy American or domestic-content documentation on federal and institutional work.
