Sta-Kon RB853U NYLON RNG TERM 18-14 No6 BOLT 90DEG

The RB853U is sized for 18-14 AWG stranded copper wire, which is the blue color code band in nylon insulated terminals. Pairing it with 16 AWG control or fixture wire is the typical use. Anything 12 AWG or larger needs a yellow-band terminal instead.

The RB853U has a 90 degree bend between the barrel and the ring, so the wire runs perpendicular to the stud face. That is what you want in a shallow enclosure or crowded panel where a straight terminal would force the conductor into the cover, or where the wire has to break sideways off a terminal block. For a normal in-line pull onto a stud, a straight ring terminal is the simpler choice.

The conductor barrel is copper, so it terminates copper wire only. Do not use it on aluminum conductors, which require a terminal rated AL or AL9CU with the appropriate inhibitor compound.

A ring, like the RB853U, cannot back off the stud if the screw loosens, which is why ring terminals are required on grounding connections and preferred on anything subject to vibration. A spade or fork terminal slides out from under a loosened screw, but lets you land the wire without removing the screw entirely, which is faster on dense terminal strips.

Nylon, as used on the RB853U, holds up better than vinyl against abrasion, crushing during insertion into tight enclosures, and solvents or oils. It also resists flaring when the barrel is crimped. Vinyl insulated terminals are the lower cost option for clean, dry, low-stress work.

It is a crimp terminal, not solder or screw type, so it needs a crimper matched to insulated barrels in the 18-14 AWG range, using the blue nest or die. A plier style cutter or an undersized die will not develop a reliable crimp on the copper barrel.
