OATEY 31347 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Does the Oatey 31347 tube brush clean the outside of the pipe or the inside of the fitting?
The 31347 is an outside brush. It cleans the exterior of 1 inch pipe ahead of soldering. For the inside of a 1 inch copper fitting socket you need a fitting brush instead, since this one is sized to wrap the tube OD.
2) Can I use the 31347 on steel or plastic pipe?
No. It is built for cleaning 1 inch pipe exterior prior to soldering, which is a copper operation. Plastic pipe needs primer and cement, not brushing, and threaded steel needs no soldering prep at all.
3) Do I still need flux and emery cloth if I use this brush?
The brush handles the mechanical cleaning of the tube exterior so flux and solder can wet the copper. You still need flux, solder, and a fitting brush for the socket side. Abrasive cloth is optional once the tube is brushed clean to bright metal.
4) Will the Oatey 31347 brush slip in my hand when the tube is wet or oily?
It has a non-slip outer brush cover, which is what you grip while spinning the brush on the tube. That cover is the reason it holds in a wet or flux-smeared hand better than a bare wire spiral brush.
