1) What size copper tube does the Oatey 31345 tube brush clean?
The Oatey 31345 is sized for 1/2 inch O.D. copper tube. It cleans the outside of the tube end, which is the half of the joint a fitting brush can't reach. For the socket side of the fitting you need a separate inside-diameter fitting brush in the matching size.
2) Do I still need to use flux if I clean the pipe with an Oatey 31345 brush?
Yes. The 31345 brush is a prep tool only, it scours oxidation off the exterior of 1/2 inch O.D. tube so the solder will wet the surface. Flux and solder are separate purchases, and the joint still has to be fluxed immediately after brushing before the copper re-oxidizes.
3) Is a tube brush better than emery cloth or sand cloth for prepping copper?
Different tools for different halves of the joint. A brush like the Oatey 31345 wraps the 1/2 inch tube and cleans the full circumference in a few twists, which is faster and more consistent on a repeat job. Emery or sand cloth is more flexible across sizes and gets into tight spots, but it's slower and easy to miss a spot on the back side of the pipe in a wall cavity. Plumbers doing production repipes generally carry both.
4) Will the Oatey 31345 brush work on 1/2 inch PEX or CPVC?
No. It is a wire tube brush meant for cleaning copper tube exteriors ahead of soldering. PEX connections are crimped or expanded and CPVC is solvent welded, neither needs abrasive prep, and running a wire brush on plastic pipe scores it and can compromise the joint.
5) Does the Oatey 31345 tube brush have a handle or do I grip the bristles?
It has a non-slip outer brush cover, so you grip the housing rather than the wire. That matters on a repipe where you're spinning dozens of joints, bare wire brushes chew up your fingers fast.
