OATEY 39000 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will the Oatey 39000 air admittance vent fit a 1-1/2 inch drain line?
Yes. The Oatey 39000 in-line vent is sized for 1-1/2 inch NPT connections, which is the standard trap arm size for lavatory sinks, tubs and showers. It is a push-to-connect installation, so it goes on without solvent cement.
2) How many fixture units can the Oatey 39000 in-line vent handle?
It is rated at 20 DFU on a branch and 8 DFU on a stack. That branch rating covers a typical group of bathroom or kitchen fixtures, but check your local code before relying on one vent for a whole branch, since jurisdictions differ on where air admittance valves are permitted.
3) Can an in-line vent replace the vent stack through the roof?
Not as a blanket substitution. An air admittance valve like the 39000 only lets air into the system; it cannot relieve positive pressure, so a drainage system still needs at least one open vent to atmosphere. Use it where running a vent line is impractical, such as an island sink or a remodel addition, and keep the main stack.
4) How does an in-line vent keep sewer gas out of the room?
The Oatey 39000 is spring loaded. Negative pressure in the drain line, created when water runs, pulls the valve open so air can enter and break the vacuum on the trap seal. When pressure goes positive the spring seats the valve shut, so drain gases cannot push back through it into the room.
5) Is this vent OK to leave exposed under a pedestal sink or open vanity?
It is finished in chrome over an ABS body, so it is meant to be seen. That is the difference between this one and a white or black plastic AAV that has to be hidden in a wall cavity or cabinet. Under a pedestal sink or an open-leg vanity it matches the chrome trap and tailpiece.
6) Do I need solvent cement or thread sealant to install the Oatey 39000?
No cement. The 39000 is a push-to-connect design that goes in line with the 1-1/2 inch NPT connection, so it installs by hand. It has to be mounted upright and left accessible, the way any air admittance valve does, so the internal seal can be serviced or replaced later.
