OATEY 31912 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Do I still need to use a purple primer with Oatey 31912 CPVC cement?
No primer is required where local codes permit. The Oatey 31912 is a one-step yellow CPVC cement, so it solvent welds the joint on its own. Some jurisdictions still call for a primed joint on potable water lines regardless of the cement being one-step, so the local code is what decides it, not the product.
2) What is the coldest temperature I can glue CPVC at with this cement?
Down to 0 degrees F (-17 C). It is an all-weather formula with a recommended application range of 0 F to 110 F (-17 C to 43 C), so it works on a winter job site or in an unheated crawlspace as well as in summer heat. Below freezing, still wipe the pipe and fitting dry of frost before applying.
3) Will this cement hold up on a hot water line?
Yes. The joint is rated for cold and hot water systems up to 200 degrees F (93 C), which covers domestic hot water service on CPVC. Note that 200 F is the in-service limit for the system, not the temperature you apply the cement at.
4) Can I use this yellow cement on PVC drain pipe or on a PVC-to-CPVC transition?
No. This is a CPVC-formulated cement, meant for CPVC pipe and fittings. For PVC DWV or PVC pressure pipe, use a PVC cement instead. A PVC-to-CPVC connection is normally made mechanically with a transition fitting rather than solvent welded with this product.
5) What size CPVC pipe is Oatey 31912 rated for?
Up to 2 inch diameter copper tube size (CPVC CTS) hot and cold potable water pipe and fittings, with an interference fit. That covers the typical residential and light commercial domestic water range. For larger diameter CPVC, you need a heavy-bodied cement rated for that size.
6) Does the 16 oz can come with a brush, or do I need to buy one?
A dauber is included in the can, mounted in the lid. Nothing else to buy for application. The 16 oz size is the common size for CTS work up to 2 inch and it weighs about 1.231 lb.
7) Why is CPVC cement yellow instead of clear or orange?
The yellow color is the industry visual marker for CPVC one-step cement, and it lets an inspector confirm at a glance that the correct cement was used on a CPVC potable line. Oatey 31912 is the all-weather yellow version, and it is approved for FlowGuard Gold systems.
