1) Can Oatey 31121 gray cement be used on potable water lines, or is it DWV only?
The Oatey 31121 heavy duty gray fast set cement is approved for DWV, potable water and irrigation work. It complies with NSF/ANSI 61 health effects requirements and meets ASTM D2564, so it is not limited to drain, waste and vent use.
2) What pipe sizes will this Oatey PVC cement handle?
It works on all schedules and classes of PVC pipe and fittings with an interference fit, up to 12 inch diameter on pressure pipe and up to 18 inch on non-pressure pipe. Above those diameters you need a heavier-bodied cement rated for the size.
3) Can I use this PVC cement on CPVC or ABS pipe?
No. The 31121 is formulated for PVC only. ABS needs an ABS-specific black cement, and CPVC needs a CPVC cement or an approved transition cement. Using PVC cement on those materials will not produce a sound solvent weld.
4) How cold can it be when I glue PVC with Oatey 31121?
Recommended application range is 40 to 110 degrees F (4 to 43 degrees C). Below 40 F the solvent flashes off too slowly and cure is unreliable, so on cold-weather jobs either warm the work area or switch to a cement rated for low temperature application.
5) What is the maximum service temperature for this solvent cement joint?
Maximum use temperature is 60 degrees C. That suits cold water supply, irrigation and DWV. It is not a hot water cement, so do not use it on lines that will run above that.
6) Will this Oatey cement pass VOC rules in California air districts?
Yes. It is a low VOC solvent cement meeting SCAQMD 1168/316A or BAAQMD Method 40 requirements, and like all Oatey solvent cement and primer products it is certified to UL Greenguard Gold. That matters on California work and on institutional jobs with indoor air quality specs.
7) Why choose fast set gray cement over a regular medium-body clear PVC cement?
Fast set gray is built for speed: it is formulated for quick installation of irrigation pipe and fittings, so you get shorter set times when you are running a lot of joints in a day. The trade-off is less working time to seat and rotate the fitting. On large-diameter or tight-tolerance joints where you want more open time, a standard-set cement is easier to work with. Gray also hides better on gray PVC and outdoor irrigation work than clear.
8) Is Oatey 31121 acceptable for a loose or belled fitting?
No. The cement is specified for PVC pipe and fittings with an interference fit, meaning the joint has to be snug dry. A sloppy or gapped socket will not solvent weld properly with this product regardless of how much cement you apply.
9) How much cement is in the Oatey 31121 can and how far does it go?
It is a 16 oz can (about 0.034 cubic feet by the published volume figure, 1.15 lb product weight). A pint is the common one-man size for a day of residential or irrigation fitting work; crews standing up large-diameter pressure pipe generally step up to quart or larger containers.
